Young people are committing sex offense more!

Recent study has shown that the sex offenders are becoming younger in age and also more violent. A CNN article claims that “Associated Press review of national statistics found, and treatment professionals say the offenders are getting younger and the crimes more violent.” There has been a significant increase in people under 18 convicted of sex crimes. In 1985, the number was around 24,000 while it increased to 33,000 in 2004. This is something we need to worry a lot about. We need to see why are the young people taking part in this kind of activity. I believe this directly has to do with the amount of sex and violence that are perceived in our media and our society.

It would be very interesting to see if this pattern also prevails in countries outside North America. Even though sex is a social taboo in various cultures, the addiction to sex seems to be very high however. In addition, the restricted status of sex seems to have been decreasing in various cultures. For instance, we are seeing more and more people in India becoming aware of sex issues. We see discussion on AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases are being discussed much more freely than before. I am not saying that it is bad to discuss about these issues because it is a valid fact that STDs are spreading throughout India. Therefore, this is an issue. Social taboo does not really stop many people from taking part in extra marital sex and things like those. Anyways, free discussions of sex and related issues show that people in India are opening up to sex. Therefore, we might also see more younger people committing sex crimes in India and other places in the near future. Let’s not also forget now-a-days violence is treated as entertainment by movie and video game industries. This surely will increase these types of activities all over the world.
