Are Bengalis a bit rude?
By Arnab on Sep 28, 2007 in Internet, Life
In general, I found Bengalis to be very rude! I can say that since I am a Bengali. Most of us do not give any kind of damn about being polite and/or courteous to other people. We seem to think we are the best nation in the world and so we hate Pakistan or India in turn. We also hate the white, black (negro as we call) and Chinese. Let’s now look at some personal matter. A friend of my girl went to Bangladesh to visit. Her relatives told her before she went to bed, “Since you gained so much weight, when sleeping on the bed do not move too much because you might break the bed.” What kind of shitty attitude is that! Someone came all the way from Canada to meet you guys and now you treat her like this. In addition, when I was in Bangladesh, I have seen my parents treating some of my relatives coming from villages. Let’s not get started on how we treat the “servants” in our houses there. How can we forget about the attitudes of some rickshaw drivers with the customers and even among themselves? Furthermore, have you seen the sales associates in Bangladeshi stores?
Today we were interviewing an asshole from Bangladesh for our business. We have got a few responses and today I was interviewing one of them. Anyways, read the job description that the applicants were responding to.
We are working on a new international company. We are hiring an advanced programmer for an exciting project. It’s a project based job and you will be given a certain amount of time to finish the project from home. The faster you finish more you will be paid. The applicant must be honest, easygoing and have an advanced knowledge of at least 1 programming language. In addition, the applicant must have an access to computer and required softwares from home. We prefer someone who is currently living in India or Bangladesh. If interested please contact us with the position number in your subject.
We specifically mentioned that this was a project that the designer had to work from home. It is a simple flash/java based project and we could get someone from Canada to get it done. However, we want to try out the prospect of outsourcing as many other companies are doing it. Anyways, we started the interview. As soon as the applicant heard that we were from Canada, he asked for a laptop, fulltime internet connection and a dedicated office as well as a team for him. This is a simple flash/java based project for God’s sake! I being the lead designer even I do not get a free laptop from my company. Anyways, you should not need more than 2 weeks to finish this project. I thought that he misunderstood the complexity of the work we were looking into. Therefore, I tried to explain it to him. Among other things, I told him that this was an easy project and that he could do it in his leisure time if he liked. The asshole mocked me, “aami jodi leisure time-e kaaj kori tahole personal time kothay pabo? ghumiye ghumiye shopno dekhe?” (Translation: If I work during my leisure time, then where is my personal time? My dreams while sleeping?”) I dismissed the interview right away. I do not need attitude from someone, who cant read the description. The job description specially mentions everything. Eventhough not mentioned grade 5 level of comprehension also required for this job. I think I should mention that in the description to screen out retards like this one. He thought since I was from Canada I would give him a free laptop and free internet connection just because he asked for it. I am very fair. If I see positive work then I would not mind providing reasonable salary for the work.
It is important to be gentle I believe. I am in the hiring committee and it is my responsibility to find not only good but a positive programmer. I have interviewed applicants from Canada for other positions. I have found them to be very gentle. I have always had at least some kind of problem interviewing people from Bangladesh but there is nothing compared to this one. If he had acted gently with me he could have ended up having a very juicy job. He just had to work from home and at the end of two weeks he could have received a pay cheque of a very attractive sum of money. Anyways, it’s his own choice to be a bitch and it’s my choice to hire someone else. We will be interviewing a few more people tomorrow. I do not like their resume that much actually. Anyways, let’s see.

we are not rude….we are simply bunch of idiots who dont know how to behave !

LOL…I understand what you are getting at. I being a Bengali might be a bit rude as well…
I guess the title is a bit too extreme but I found that we as a nation tend to be a little “not nice.” I deal with all sorts of people everyday and I found that the brown people tend to be in the “rude” category a bit more than others.
anyways, thanks for the comments.

Please do not categorise all brown people as rude, I, living in the UK, have experience polite indians and pakistanis and only have experience of rude begalis. they do think the world was made for them and that they have some sort of birth-right to other peoples things, namely MONEY! They like to shun indians and paki’s but want discounts and all other forms of benefits from them. they are a joke in human form.

Dude, I don’t know how old are you but this comment of yours was really immature.
This is a very racist comment from your part. My issue was not to demonize the bengalis. I, myself, a Bengali and I believe that we are not as polite as others. We don’t carry a “rude” gene in our body but our surrounding and environment makes us a bit not polite. There are however room for improvements.
The same goes for the non-Bengali brown people. I have found all the brown people bargaining in the stores for every little thing. While working at retail, I found brown people expecting promotions weeks after it ended and expected stores to take in stuff months after purchase. In this sector, I actually had a bit better experience with Bengalis than non-Bengali brown people.
Again I cannot generalize this. I based my arguments based totally on my personal experience. There might be a lot of polite brown people as well and I have met them. However, calling Bengalis a “joke in human form” is really outrageous.

Lolz, it’s true. Sone bengalis blame all Pakis for 1971 when these Pakis are young and they were born years after 1971.
Sunny | Jan 31, 2008 | Reply
We should not blame modern generation pakis for what their older generation did. Some of them actually feel bad for what their army did in 1971. However, it would be nice if the Pakistani government would apologize officially and also return Bangladesh all the unreturned wealth. Musharaff was pretty much against the notion of Pakistan apologizing or returning the money.

To all, Bengali does not mean Bangladeshis only…there are Bengalis from India also…so dont generalise anything dude…being a bengali from India…I think yes Bangladeshi Bengalis are bit rude and pervert in every act they do.
Kimsuk | Apr 19, 2008 | Reply
I agree with Kimsuk. The term Bengali has become misleading. Maybe the time has come to mandatorily add India or Bangladesh, to specify – eg London, UK and London, Ontario. Or one could leave ‘Bengali’ for the Indians and use ‘Bangladeshi’ for their eastern counterparts.

Hello! What do you mean Bengalis? Bengali Hindus originally from India (West Bengal) do not like to be compared with Bangladeshi Muslims. Your topic thread should have been “Are Bangladeshis a bit rude?” Why should we carry your image burden? Besides, my family originates from Undivided India in Dhaka region. It was Muslim atrocities that drove them away from their own country. The last thing I would want is to be compared with a Bangladeshi; I’d rather die first.

you said for Pakistan to “returning the money” I know East Pakistan gave $4 billion to create the power Pakistan military machine; however, if we ge the money back then it’s only fair if we take on the debt of that country as well.

I don’t agree with Arnab’s view – generalizing that Bengalis are rude. Basically, any local inhabitants from its own region has certain attitude; however, the same people who travel outside of their local domain – they change there approach and attitudes.

Yeah. I’m ‘white’. The majority of the good people I have met in my life are Bangladeshi. I can see why some people might think they’re rude, but that is because when you are (mostly) taught the truth (or see the truth firsthand) about the current global societal/economic structure, you tend to shy away from the bull. I really don’t blame you for being frustrated about this jerk-off, but I can’t picture a single Bangladeshi I know asking for something from somebody like that.

This is unfortunately true about Bengali people, I am Bengali myself. And I have many bad experiences with Bengali people. here are just a few of them:
1. An example of laughing or ridiculing other people’s misfortune. Like my brother’s wife tends to do a ridicule seeing other girls who can not afford expensive clothes, looking down on them is very cruel. My brother married his wife from Bangladesh who is from a modest poor family, so I thought this was very hypocritical and she should know better.
2. Jealousy and Envy. Bengali people don’t like seeing other people do well, why not be inspired by it or motivated by seeing other people do well. All because I drive a car now, I am called a “show off” by those Bengali guys who don’t have a car and yet they strive to do the same whilst dispising people who do have cars. Very hypocritical.
3. Belittling . Trying to always put someone down regardless of situation. I would never take the mick out of people who may have lost a job or failed an exam. But bengali people tend to belittle people in this situation. This is blatantly wrong and I have been a victim of this.
There are many more examples maybe I will tell some other time.
Conclusion . Unfortunately Bengali people’s Psychology is so twisted that they cant tell wrong from right anymore. Morality does not exist in the bengali mentality. So please people we all need to change our ways, we will all need to answer to God someday, and be judged by what we say and do, so hold your tongue and think twice before you say things at other peoples expense.
I avoid bengali people unless really necessary like going mosque or wedding. And another coping strategy is say “may god judge and handle this”, because soon as you think and lose sleep over what he/she said they have have won.

After reading your above published articles it seems to me that there should be wider discussions about the Bengalees.
The Hindu Bengalees and the Muslim Bengalees maintain a curtain between them. This is keeping them distanced. This is not very unnatural. Such situation is there between the Arab Israelis and the Jewish Israelis; Black Americans and the White Americans; and the Roman Catholics and the Protestants; and between the Brahmins and the non-Brahmins amongst the Hindus.
There is also a hide and seek policy even amongst the Bengalees. Yes, hatred, jealousy, and animosity are there primarily due to lack of communication. This let to the Partition of Bengal in 1947.
In consideration of the above I strongly feel that there should be more communication towards better inter-group understanding.
Looking forward to hearing from the learned readers of this forum.

After reading all these comments, i must say i am outraged by all the so called Bengali’s criticiszing their own race. I am british born Bengali (sylhet) educated in the UK to a degree level and live in London one of the most multi cultural cities in the world, i live amongst bengalis, blacks, indians, pakistani’s, morrocan etc… and i can safely say all cultures have their rude and arrogant people and some a lot more than ours. You all seem to judge the whole race of Bengali on your own or one experience based on a certain individual or certain experiece, yes there are rude people, and yes may be feelings are not consdired of people and harsh criticisms are made of people such as weight gain, but that’s only because the people from Bangldesh are not very familier with the western culture, a culture which puts a little more effor not much into considering other people’s feeling. Did you ever consider that if you were born in bangladesh instead of Canada, UK etc… that you would have turned out the same way, as the economic and social structure there is deprived and people are contructed to think and act in a certain way, Poverty makes people aggressive and rude, look at Some parts of Africa, Somalia, Algeria, war torn countries like that are producing who in my opinion are much worse than Bengalis. So let this be the end of it and enbrace the many good parts of our culture such as hospitatlity, family unity, one for all and all for one, instead a few bad ones.

You talk about your brothers wife ridiculing people who can’t afford expensive clothes, i am sorry to say that is nothing to do with being a bengali, this is simply because she is a very egotistical, arrogant B****, one who laughs at someone else ability to buy expensive clothes is not part of the human race and should not be associated dogs let alone bengalis, sadly there are people like this on this earth and they are not begali people, they deserve a name of their own and that is pathetic.

How did you come to a conclusion that poverty causes rudeness? I know so many poor people that are really nice. I also know a lot of rich people, who are pretty annoying.
I was born in Bangladesh and brought up in Canada. I am from Toronto, which is a really multicultural city. I also meet people from Africa, Algeria, Asia and all those nice places. People are really nice and friendly. A lot of these people come from very poor families as refugees but their loving characters is definitely formidable.

Jeez, shut the hell up.
Everywhere you go, people see Bengalis as the ”lower caste” of the Indian Sub-continent. Allow Bengalis seeing themselves in this way too.
We’re a poor country. We have a crap economy. Yet, our young people are becoming future doctors, lawyers and teachers in bigger economies such as the UK and US. So what the hell if we are proud people?
These personality traits that some of you mention are all universal. You’re trying to tell me hypocrisy, jealousy or arrogance is only found in Bangladesh? Every human who has walked the face of Earth has faults. Don’t push them on Bengalis like some sick wannabes.
I don’t see why Bengalis have to see themselves in a negative light. If you’re Bengali and think you’re above the rest of us, then grow up. How about improving and being proud of your country instead of dissing it on some crappy website?
& lastly to Mrs I Was Brutally Raped, you’re countrymen raped Bengali women AND men like they’d never got any before. Before you start throwing accusations around, I suggest you look at your own rapist past. I’m 99% sure your male ancestors raped someone in 1971. If what you’re saying is true [highly doubt it- I mean, who'd rape a Paki], then I’d see it as payback.

“Young” people from all nations become doctors and lawyers in the US and UK. It doesn’t make Bengalis “better” than other nations.
The true fact is that US and UK have created a certain atmosphere in their nations, which allowed new immigrants to become lawyers and doctors in their countries. This is an achievement for the western nations rather than Bengalis.

I don’t agree with Arnab that Bengalis are rude (in general). The mentality that you speak of exists in every ethnic community in India, and I’ve seen this first hand. Too bad you came across a loser, and unwittingly projected his attitude on the whole community!

Read the post again. I gave other examples of Bengalis being really rude in general. A few other people also provided some other examples. I don’t know about other communities in India because I am a Bengali and can’t say anything about others.
There are nice Bengalis too and Bengalis are very creative in general. However, we are a little bit more rude and we should try to become more respectful towards other cultures.

I’ve read the post dude. I stand by what I’d mentioned earlier. Sure, you’ve come across bad examples, as have some of the others here, but Bengalis in general can’t be called rude. This is the first time, in fact, that I’m reading of a stereotype of this nature. If you think Bengalis are rude, come and visit Delhi (esp. the Punjabi population) and you’ll see what being mean actually is. That was a stereotyping on my behalf too, so I must say that while I don’t think all Delhiite Punjabis are rude, I’ve come across quite a few.

You’ve written that you can’t comment on other communities in India since you don’t belong to them. I didn’t intend to demean other communinites in my last post, which seems to be your impression. I merely pointed out to the fact that the incidents you’ve cited above refer to a lazy, bureaucratic mentality pervading across India, and not Bengal/ Bengalis in particular. Cheers!
Abhi | Dec 22, 2008 | Reply
If you compare Bengalis with other Indian communities then it’s a whole new story. Although born in Bangladesh, I grew up in Canada and I would compare people from Bangladesh with other western communities.
As I mentioned in the post, it’s not just about the communications on a personal level. We tend to blame ALL our problems on India except on December when we blame everything on Pakistan. We need to take responsibilities of our own actions. We can’t just keep hating other nations.
Also, stereotypes are not necessarily false or a bad thing. For instance, there is a stereotype here that the desi people work harder and they are career oriented. There are some loser desis I know but in general we are very career oriented. I also find Bengalis to be really creative and that is a stereotype too. It could be that South-Asians in general are very creative but that would be a huge generalization for me to establish.

”We tend to blame ALL our problems on India except on December when we blame everything on Pakistan.”
Not the educated ones. And anyhoo, a lot of sh*t is blamed on Bangladesh too. Its just a a ring of blame in South Asia- probably always will be that way. You make it sound as if Indians and Pakistanis never blame us [which they do]. That said, I [and most Bengalis], respect and can work with people whether Indian, Pakistani, black, green, red or yellow – but that doesn’t mean we can’t have national pride [which 99% of the world has anyway]
“but that would be a huge generalization for me to establish.”
And saying that Bengalis are rude is not a ”huge generalisation”?? How very hypocritical…

Please do not jump to such big conclusions when the only Bengali contact you get is with a few guys who you have recieved resumes from. Don’t say “Most of us” when you have never met “Most of us”. Buddy, I grew up with Bengalis and non-Bengalis around me. I get to compare my people with people from other cultures. Anyways, people have different definitions of being “polite” or “courteous.” It seems like we tend to put the bar of “politeness” very low compared to others.
“And saying that Bengalis are rude is not a ”huge generalisation”?? How very hypocritical…”
No, it’s not. India has a million culture in there with more than a billion people. I have never been to India in my life. On the other hand, Bangladesh has a very homogeneous culture and I spent a significant amount of time there.

“Buddy, I grew up with Bengalis and non-Bengalis around me.”
Ditto. Yet, from what I see, the rudeness is found in all kinds of people from all kinds of cultures. Open your eyes. Maybe you only seem to note the rudeness in Bengalis since they are your own people? Or maybe it’s just because you have a huge issue with being Bengali? Only the good Lord knows.
You’ve never met me, my family, my friends, my neighbours. You’ve never met the Bengali community I grew up with, or many of the Bengalis reading this now. So, how can you say your petty argument isn’t a generalisation when can only speak about the Bengalis YOU know? You probably have met less than 0.01% of the Bengali population so I repeat, THIS IS ONE HUGE GENERALISATION.
Anyhoo, don’t you find it rude in itself that you sit here saying all Bengalis are rude? If you’re the ideal Bengali example to go by, then hell yeah, maybe we are rude. How can you sit there and diss a whole 189 million people by questioning their manners? How very rude…

No, I don’t find it rude to say something as it is. As I said before, stereotypes are not bad or false. If I follow your argument then we can’t make any kind of generalization on any culture, positive or negative, since we haven’t met all of the people from that culture.
It doesn’t work that way. A subset of a whole population says a lot about that population. For example, Desi parents “in general” DO put lots of pressure on their kids in becoming doctors & lawyers. I didn’t meet all parents but both you and I know that they do that.
“In general” is a keyword here.

No sorry no. They CAN and most likely, ARE, bad or false. And why should you make generalisations about any culture? Do you really have nothing better to do in your life than point fingers at people? “Oh, black people do this and white people do that. Bengali people are like this and Pakistanis are like that.” Don’t you find all that just a teeny weeny bit sad and lame?
From what I read in this article, you’re having problems finding a programmer or something. How about concentrating on that rather than these minor stereotypes thought up as a result of cultural prejudice? HUGE crisis in the middle east, yet your concern lies in rude Bengalis. There really ain’t justice in this world.
Now, from what I see, hell yeah- a lot is said about Bengali people. But rudeness? Nah, never heard that one. Especially from a fellow Bengali.
Me | Dec 31, 2008 | Reply
Ok, now, I am confused. What does middle-east crisis has anything to do with this? I never said rudeness of Bengalis is an international crisis.
Also, when did I say all day long I say stuff against blacks and whites? Racism is the last thing out there, which I support or encourage. Otherwise, I would not have openly expressed negative aspects of my own race.
You are an idiot. Stereotypes are not bad. That’s why you have positive stereotype and negative stereotype. No one thins positive stereotypes are bad. Do some research on stereotype. Discrimination is bad not necessarily stereotype. Do some research on stereotype, discrimination and racism. While you are at it, look at some benefits of stereotypes as well.
Also, just because you didn’t hear about something it doesn’t mean it’s not true.

OK, you continue being a “confused” bengali, and I will continue to be a “rude” one.
To me, stereotyping will always be a bad thing, no research needed. Sure you’ve heard the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. I don’ care if you’re saying Bengalis are “rude” or Bengalis are funny, its all a huge exaggeration. By the way, don’t you reckon calling a bunch of people “rude” is a “negative stereotype”? From your crappy logic, that’s a “bad” thing…
And as for “my own race”> being Bengali is not a race. “Race” itself, ceases to exist anymore and has been replaced with other breakdowns. So please, none of this nonsence about racism. Nobody accused you of being racist. Don’t put words in my mouth. However, I do find appropriate analogies with calling Bengalis “rude” as with having prejudice towards someone because of the colour of their skin. Culture, colour, creed > all superficial. None of it should be a basis of judging people.
As for “discrimination”, read what I wrote. I’m most definitely not mentioning it or anything associated with it. Perhaps “prejudice” is the better word. “Rude Bengalis” > now thats definitely prejudice and don’t you try to deny it.
Me | Jan 1, 2009 | Reply
“To me, stereotyping will always be a bad thing, no research needed.”
That’s because you are an idiot. Saying “MAC” system is good is a stereotype too. Any kind of generalization is a stereotype and people use it all the time.
Buddy, the only reason you confuse me because you lack in ur sense of logic. You accuse me of racism by making the ridiculous assumptions that I think about black/white people all the time in ur previous message and now you deny it. Come on, try to be a little more logical and think before you write.
For your information, the fact that the word, “racism” exist, then the concept of “race” exists too. However, the definition of “race” is different among different people. Some people consider criticizing “religion” is also racism.
Again, you are confusing between being prejudiced and stereotyping. Unless you attempt to understand the difference, no point of arguing with you. When you act against one individual or treat someone differently on the basis of your stereotype then you are being prejudiced. Even though I believe Bengalis are rude in general, I am not going to treat one individual Bengali differently because I do believe there are nice Bengalis too.

No, that’s discrimination, not prejudice. There’s a difference, but I’m sure you’ll know this already.
“then the concept of “race” exists too.”
The concept does indeed exist, however, I am not arguing against that. A “concept” denotes an “idea”, race is not merely an “idea” as it deals with physical grouping. If you ever study taxonomy, you’ll see “race” cannot be a divison within the human species as our phenotypic characteristics are not strict enough for social division. Nowadays, breakdown is tunnelled towards ethnic origin. Racism is an old term, and to date, has not been geared to consider this.
“Any kind of generalization is a stereotype”
No, you’re mistaken. Generalisations are flexible and can expand to many possibilities. Stereotypes are much more rigid and put an end to any further enquiry. All sterotypes are based on generalisations, but not all generalisations are stereotypes. This is easier to explain in a Venn diagram. The pint to note is that neither is a fair judgement on people.
“and people use it all the time.”
What were you hoping to achieve by saying this? Just because something is done often, does that make it ok? You seem dead-against racism. People are racist all the time, does that make it ok? Didn’t want to use such a rash analogy, but I’m hoping you see what I mean.
“Come on, try to be a little more logical and think before you write.”
Ditto.

SOME CONTRUCTIVE AND RATIONAL THOUGHTS ON THE PROBLEMS AND ISSUES OF THE MUSLIM WORLD TODAY
I am a Muslim and I always highly value the fundamental principles of Islam. Today, internationally, Islam has become a prime subject of thoughtful comparison and analysis, especially when the matters are related to socio-political subjects.
What I wanted to think loudly is that: Why not all Muslims and their friends examine the problems and issues of the Muslims around the world? Even if we cannot bring solution to those, at least, we may open some avenues for thoughts of the immediate future generations. We know most of these, but we all ignore these. Some of these problems and issues of the Muslims, as stated below, may be intensively examined and constructive suggestions towards remedial measures may please be made. Good analysis and constructive suggestions will be of great value for the Muslims, non-Muslims and others as well.
1. Why the Muslim countries are mostly poor?
2. Why the Muslims are least educated?
3. Why the Muslims are most corrupt in administrative and commercial matters?
4. Why the Muslims are less farsighted?
5. Why the Muslim ecclesiastic persons are less educated and are essentially backward in knowledge if compared with the same of other religions?
6. No Muslim country has codified Islamic Shariah Law. However, many Muslims talk of Shariah law. Where is the Shariah law? In fact, there is none in unified cumulative form. Random Fatwas by the less educated or uneducated Mullahs cannot be the pillar of Islamic Shariah Law.
7. Why the Muslims are less interested in establishing Medical, Engineering, and Technological institutions?
8. Why many Muslim countries hate many other Muslim countries?
9. Why most of the Muslim countries prefer to be ally of the non-Muslim countries?
10. Why the Muslims cannot invent many new products and cause scientific discoveries today?
11. Why the Muslim businesspersons, in most cases, are engaged in infringements and counterfeiting.
12. Why the Muslims are mostly diseased?
13. Why the Muslims do not decide to get Authorized translation of The Holy Koran?
14. Why the Muslims do not give equality to women?
15. Why in some Muslim countries translation of The Holy Koran is not allowed?
16. Why the Organization of Islamic Conference does not undertake any universal programme or project related to Islam?
17. According to The Holy Koran, we have only one Islam. But there are many versions. But why there is no official steps towards a unified and standard Islam.
18. Why the Muslims know less about other religions?
19. Our holy prophet did, but why our Mullahs do not know much about other major religions of the world?
20. Perhaps 90% world’s beggars are Muslims. Why?
21. Why the Muslims are living in most unhygienic way?
The above are some of the problems and issues hinging around the world of Muslims in the 21st Century. Almost everybody knows about these. But it is sad that rarely anybody gives thoughts to these with constructive suggestions.
It is, therefore, most earnestly requested to all who are interested on the subject to kindly make comments and give good suggestions. All moderate Muslims will appreciate and welcome constructive opinions and suggestions.
With best regards for all readers of this esteemed site.

u people make me laugh! im a uk born pakistani lived my whole life here.. i’ve seen a 50/50 split in the bengali and pakistani communities when it comes to manners and attitude. my family run a everyday small buiss in retail, we get bengalis coming and askin for impossible discounts at times i just burst out laughing at them… but we also get pakistanis like that. i am currently engaged to a bengali girl i met at uni.. i’ve known her 5 years now, her brothers are the very rude type they dont work livin off state benefits and yet they look down on me for being pakistani. i usually ignore their comments they make since i dont understand syhleti?? (did i spell that right?) but my wife to be gets angry at them and has a go.. till i tell her to calm down. anyway my main point was meant to be to anyone sayin bengalis a just a little rude… YOUR WRONG MATE!!! their either RUDE! or tollerant of others its the same for pakistanis… as for indians most are jus way up their own social status ass!

Now, that’s funny, cos all I heard was “I’m Pakistani, therefore I am fully qualified to participate in a discussion about Bengali people”
Don’t you thinks it’s strange how your initial argument was “not all Bengalis are like that” but then all your silly little examples were indirectly trying to say the opposite?
You just threw in a bunch of ridiculous stereotypes believing that somehow, just because you are Pakistani, we would take it all seriously. And just for the record, being engaged to a Bengali girl does not make your knowledge of Bengalis any more relevant than a guy from Sweden who has never met a brown person in his life.
And please, do not address us with the term “u people”. We are all individuals here and therefore, I reject this collective term.
Thank you.

unemployment amongst bengalis is the highest in the uk.
drugs especially heroin are sold in every corner by bengali gangs.
bengalis attitude towards education is unbelievable.
bengali gangs are one of the most violent in the uk.
as a whole this leads to bengalis having a i dont give a fuck attitude as they dont strive toward legal success.

I have also seen among a lot of Bengalis the problem of assimilating with the host nation. Most Bengalis in the western nations live in highly concentrated “Bengali” areas. Yes, there are exceptions but in general that’s how we are.
We hate India, Pakistan, Burma, and practically all the nations. So, I don’t know how can you tell we get along with everyone. We can’t even get along with our neighbors.

BENGALIS ARE MUSLIMS,THIS WORLD IS FOR MUSLIMS SO WHO CARES IF WERE RUDE
Anonymous | Jun 20, 2009 | Reply
The last thing I would want is to be compared with a Bangladeshi; I’d rather die first.
-This is the rudeness that has been subconsciously expressed from this rude person.
It was Muslim atrocities that drove them away from their own country.
-Was it only committed by bengali muslims? was there not any hindu atrocities in west bengal over the bengali muslims?
u r biased.the more u talk like this, the more stupid u make urself.
again, why did u want united bengal in 1905?
again, why did u want bengal divided in 1947?
answer is : for ur own interests, dividing bengal would make room for bengali muslims to become educated learned & conscious
& then kolkata wouldnt be do mastery over them, reactionary bengali hindus feared it very much that if bengal is divided,
then the domination of kolkatayans would be lost for ever,so they started terrorist attack by khudiram/putul ganguly to stop
dividing bengal,so that east bengal can never prosper & thus become a threat for west bengal.
this is cunning-like-crow kolkatayans.
again, on which rightful way, did kolkatayan landlord reign over east bengali muslim farmers?
east bengali muslim farmers used to live in east bengal & the lands righteously should be belonging to them, but feudalistic
kolkatayan landlords didnt care any righteousness & reigned over the simple & innocent muslim farmers by using their powers &
trickeries which has been masterfully depicted in sharatchandra’s short story MAHESH where gafur, a muslim peasant used to be
cheated by hindu landlords for their own interests.
if bengali muslims are now agitated & aggreesive to west bengali hindus, then that is Tit for Tat for what mischiefs
kolkatayans did to them.
If these kolkatayan are so much patriotic for having united bengal, then why did they not shout for united bengal during
1947,why is this double standard?
bangladeshi people are the most suffferer of all, once they use to be suffered by kolkatayan bengalis & then they were
suffered by pakistani dogs.
both west bengali & pakistani did run a tyranny over bangladeshi muslims.
now,kolkata is history.
kolkata has nothing at present, kolkata is one of the most contaminated & air polluted cities of the world, kolkata doesnt have
any high rise structures & now there are very few cultural icons from kolkata.the great icons from bengalis mostly hail from
east bengal which is now present day bangladesh, e.g. bimol roy/amartya kumar sen/sachin dev burman/rahul dev burman/geeta
dutt/bappi lahiri/suchitra sen etc etc.they/their families migrated from east bengal to west bengal after partition.
bengali muslims are human beings, they may have some shortcomings but they are not bastard crow like kolkatayans who knows
only cheating-flattery-mockery-diplomacy by which they ruled over innocent & simple muslim bengalis.
i am an atheist, neither a hindu nor a muslim,so there is no use in attacking me by means of religion.
& india helped bangladesh, for that bangladeshis are thankful, but india did it for its own purpose, not a single country wants
to be surrounded by its enemy country & india also didnt want.
notable novelists from west bengal also have mentioned tyrannies by hindu bengalies over muslim bengalis of east bengal which
certainly indicated that muslim bengalis were suffered from very side, once by kolkatayans * then by pakistanis.’
now just compare between DHAKA & kolkata.
kolkata is no match for DHAKA at present, you & pakistanis did a lot against us but still couldnt stop bangladesh & in such a
short time within 38 years of independence ( where india/pakistan got their 62 years!),it is on the list of Next-11 countries
& HDI/GDP/Economy growth rate & some other indicators show that Bangladeshis are progressing much faster than india &
pakistan both.
projected 2050,bangladesh will be one of the strongest economies of the world.

Imtiaz, you are obviously not an atheist and it is okay to be a “Muslim” and talk about “Muslim” rights. Anyways, I was born in Bangladesh as well.
I don’t want to go too much depth because both you and your friends are a WAY TOO much out of topic here. Not everything is about religion and you are obviously a religious fanatic.
I just want to add a little bit about your ambition of Bangladesh becoming the strongest economy by 2050. All small third world countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Somalia etc etc are “locked into” poverty. The population density is just too high for any economic recovery. The GDP growth and craps don’t mean anything. The quality of life will continue going down.
Bangladesh, Srilanka and Maldives will specially have a higher impact because of global warming and rising water level. My dad’s family is from Khulna/Barisal and I have been to Kuakata multiple times. If you talk to people from there then you would know that the water has already covered more than 20 KM of what used to be dry lands in last 10 years.
Anyways, for the small third world coastal countries I don’t see anything but gloomy future. Bangladesh needs to educate it’s poor population and try to control it’s population growth. Otherwise, all these fake craps about Bangladesh becoming the strongest economy of the world would make all politicians look stupid and people, who buy into this crap would be portrayed as BIGGER idiots.
Anyways, I don’t want to start a religious flame wars and so I won’t approve any more religious discussion on this topic. Let’s stick to how, as Bengalis, united can overcome the challeges we face today.

R.E. “admin”
In late 20th/ early 21st centuries, there’s been three major contries undertaking Population Control measures. Out of these, all three have been seen to be controversial by its people.
You can’t stop humans from having babies. Reproduction is a natural part of every member of the animal kingdom. And it’s not poor people at fault here. Yes, they have many babies, but what else happens? These babies die young; most never see adulthood. This reinforces an equilibrium, so poor populations are more or less constant. An example would be parts of eastern/ central Africa where population growth is negligible- and these are people living in poverty.
The problem in Bangladesh is its mid-income population. There is a huge taboo associated with contraception, but these families DO have the resources to take care of their young, leading to an increase in people. You cannot change someone’s beliefs or faith very easily so education may not work.
So, whatever you do, don’t blame the poor. They couldn’t afford contraception, even if they tried. Natural family planning (i.e. the rhythm method) is not 100% effective so there is no certain means of birth control. They are not stupid; they know the effects of having too many children, but they ARE people, so try putting yourself in their shoes.
And anyway, the decline in economic growth has nothing whatsoever to so with its people. Everything lies within the country’s government and how they choose to invest its money. Japan is a perfect example of this.
Me | Jun 24, 2009 | Reply
It 100% got to do with population. You cannot improve economy or living condition without fixing the population problem. India’s economy is thriving but the quality of life hasn’t improved that much. It’s because of the population problem.
It’s worse for smaller countries because there are not enough resources to meet such demand. So, the industries will continue hiking the price unless the government starts to “butt in.” But then you will nationalize the industries and scare off the foreign investments.
Government has never been able to fix economy of any country. It has always been the private sector with sometimes help from governments. In order to industrialize Bangladesh, you need to kick out farmers and farm lands like what has happened recently in West Bengal.
Also, let’s not forget the poor countries have been paying back tremendous amount of loans to foreign banks and World Bank that they borrowed for investments and their leaders have successfully stole a significant portion of it.
You cannot compare Japan and/or South Korea with Bangladesh. Both of these countries received billions of dollars from the western countries during the cold war so that they don’t ally with the Soviet Union. Also, their population is not as high as Bangladesh. Current population of Bangladesh is out of control.

Oh, don’t you just love the way this guy contradicts himself? Or repeats what you say but then twists your words?
I said: “the decline in economic growth has nothing whatsoever to so with its people”
So he says: “India’s economy is thriving but the quality of life hasn’t improved that much. It’s because of the population problem.”
Thank you for repeating and emphasising my point. I was talking about economic growth which just happened to be the previous argument, not quality of life.
& as for my comment on Japan, I was talking about what they choose to invest their money in, not their wealth or population. They choose education and technology, we choose… well, God knows what. We DO have money to invest, but we also have a crappy government.
Please, do not put words in my mouth. Your arguments are becoming a little off-point.

I SAY : “it is ok to be a MUSLIM”, disproved all ur claims about me cause I AM NEVER A MUSLIM & ITS NOT OK TO BE A MUSLIM (OR HINDU OR CHRISTIAN OR BUDDHISTS & APPROX OTHER 1040 RELIGION BELIEVERS), that makes me a staunch atheist.
are you blind?did i ever say about the strongest economy?open ur eyes & read carefully as i ended with this statement :
“projected 2050,Bangladesh will be ONE OF THE STRONGEST ECONOMIES of the world.”
it is in N-11 list by Mr. Goldman, which predicts within 2050, it will be one of the major economies, for ur info.i never said the strongest.
learn to differentiate between the two.
ADMIN SAID : The population density is just too high for any economic recovery.
I SAY : who doesn’t know that?why repeating?but for your kind info, within 38 years the population growth rate has been reduced from 6.2 to 2.7 percent which is a dramatic change in such less years.this is where ambitions come from.a man without ambition is like a ship without a radar,as u may have read in school.
YOU SAID: Bangladesh, Srilanka and Maldives will specially have a higher impact because of global warming and rising water level.
I SAY: who doesn’t admit that?what you are doing here is “TELA MATHAY TEL DEWA”
again, i here replied “D” as he attacked BANGLADESHIS by his absurd words,i have not come here to give a speech about BANGLADESH’s prospect but contextually some matters automatically came which is surely not the central topic.
ADMIN SAID : My dad’s family is from Khulna/Barisal and I have been to Kuakata multiple times.
I SAY : this is the problem, you people don’t live in BANGLADESH, you are like weeds, dad’s family???!!! LOL!
“SHODHESHER PROYOJONE NAHI JAR MON,KE BOLE MANUSH TARE POSHU SHEI JON”
BANGLADESH has lots of negative points, those must be criticized but its wiser to do have ambitions & implementations along with criticizing the negative things.you people only can do some fruitless criticizing,if you would ever spend some time to think how BD can overcome its problems, then BD would have prospered far more that this.
ADMIN SAID : Bangladesh needs to educate it’s poor population and try to control it’s population growth.
I SAY : Bangladesh is trying, may be less than requied, but they are trying,UNICEF report 2000 said it has literacy rate of 60% from 17% in 38 years & now it may be above 70% in 9 years from 2000 to 2009.Female participation is also quite impressive than india & pakistan,
indians & pakistani females are nothing but lazy whores talking on mobile with boys all day & night long while bangladeshi females are giving their labour on textile agriculture & other industries.Bangladeshi females are efficient & hard working than bangladeshi males,it’s our great asset & if more properly channeled,we soon will have one of the greatest labour force.
ADMIN SAID: Let’s stick to how, as Bengalis, united can overcome the challeges we face today.
I SAY: talking is not enough, you can give lots of speeches residing outside BANGLADESH & do nothing for her.Come back & do something, then start criticizing my ambitions.LOL!
m previous post was to counter reply “D” who hurled his biased & stupid words against BANGLADESHIS.
I am an atheist & a true atheist would think about humanity, what I said in favour of bangladeshis appeared to u as I am actually muslim, but its not about religion but humanity,
if any muslim or hindu is groaning in the street being severely wounded, would i not go to him to save his life?
would i take back myself from him as i am atheist?
strict muslims are doing lots of shits nowadays, that doesnt mean all the muslims are doing shits.& sometimes innocent & liberal muslims are suffering for the crimes committed by fundamental muslims.
here issue is about JUSTICE,not about religion.
what you say just TOUCH the SURFACE,IT CANT GO DEEP INTO THE CORE.
so read carefully & then comment something.

I have a totally different approach regarding Bangladesh. I just don’t see anyway Bangladesh will achieve one of the strongest economies in the world by 2050 or even 2100…not even close.
Government will fix the economy? Which government? Even Raegan won’t be able to do anything.

Buddy, you started talking about social class not me. So, I had to remind you where you came from.
Beside, there is nothing wrong about being a low class Hindu peasant. I lot of low class peasants from Europe are in a very dignified positions today.
I agree with you, “hmm.” I have very close friends, who are Pakistanis and get along great with them. It’s sad how a lot of us tend to blame India and Pakistan in turns for our own problems.

@ “hmm”
“u probably grown up in bangladesh n still have that typical narrow minded attitude.”
No, actually I’m a ‘born in the UK, lived here all my life’ Bengali. See what I mean by stereotyping? Really, the internet is the last place you should be using to pre-judge people… [!]
“you sir maybe a rude bengali!”
No, I’m not. And ‘sir’? Again with the stereotyping…
“oh well thats life when ur busy workin… the key to ignorance is education!”
Yeh, funnily enough, I agree, which is why I’m putting myself through 6 years of university. I’m not an ignorant soul. Anyone who thought so is prejudiced.
“i hate all this national pride/ignorance”
Yeh, me too. But you know what the worst thing about it is? When people class a nation on a characteristic visible in all human forms.
Strangely, your last comment sounds pretty noble. If I didn’t know any better, I’d have nothing bad to say about you. But green is green and red is red, so whatever.

“I guess living in a closed community, your perception of freedom of speech hasn’t developed yet. Unlike you, here (in the west) we don’t traumatize or restrict speech of the opponent.”
^Well that’s a load of lies. There is a fine line between freedom of speech and inciting hatred, but all that is down to personal opinion. Hence the fact that even between the laws of the UK and USA, there is a massive gap in opinion regarding this issue.
Example? Ever watched the film Borat or Bruno? [No, me neither] But, some parts of the West raised its guidance rating, some didn’t. Some cut off large chnks of both films, some didn’t. So technically, that goes against your ‘freedom of speech in the west’ idea. Strange example, I know, but I’m having a pollen-related-sneezing-attack.
“Your ancestors were low class Hindu peasants and converted to Islam”
You really are an idiot, aren’t you? Since when did ancestory make anybody “common class”. Both our ancestors involve the earliest neanderthals who lived under trees, ate raw meat and interacted with animals [Ooh-er, very common class]. We come from the same blood, and the same ground. The value of money can make you common class in the eyes of imbeciles, but those imbeciles have common class intellect.
I will never be able to trace my ancestors, because as far as I’m aware, they are Adam and Eve [or if you're atheist, the first guy on the evolution chart]. What happens between then and now, I will never be accountable for.
So don’t bring up the Hindu peasant argument. Whether my family line involves a poor idol-worshipper, a north American slave master, a Nazi SS man or frickin’ Jack the Ripper, it don’t mean sh*t. Because I’m none of those things. The world is developing, and believe it or not, so is Bangladesh [like every other country].
& please, don’t undermine any profession in Medicine. Without Medicine, maybe you’d still be living in a slum in Bangladesh because you or your “ancestors” died from Cholera or Malaria. Whether the MBBS is from Pakistan or Kenya, you should be grateful that there are still humans out there who are careless enough to actually give a sh*t about the human species.
Anyway, that’s me done.
Me | Jun 29, 2009 | Reply
Wow, stupid, I was talking to Mushfique, not to you. He started calling names (i.e. peasants) so I had to remind him where he came from. Neanderthals didn’t have social status or class. Our recent ancestors did. When we talk about “class” we don’t mean our “uncivilized ancestors.” They were unfortunately as divided as we are.
Also, all the great medical achievements in the modern century were undertaken by the doctors and scientists from the West…not from Pakistan or Bangladesh. I don’t have any disrespect for Medicine profession as my family is crammed with doctors.
I am just saying that you shouldn’t be boasting about it. There are millions of doctors out there. You can only be proud of yourself when you have done something outstanding for other people.
“Without Medicine, maybe you’d still be living in a slum in Bangladesh because you or your “ancestors” died from Cholera or Malaria.”
Did you just realized how shitheaded statement that was? Medicine didn’t cause economic growth and if my ancestors had died in Malaria or whatever then I wouldn’t exist at all.
Beside, my ancestors (Tagores/Pirali Brahmins) are from India and Bangladesh and so I might as well be a slum-dweller in India or living in India and wouldn’t give a fuck if Bangladeshis are rude. I care about Bangladesh because I was born there.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirali_Brahmin
Anyways, I have respect for those people from the slums as I have seen them. They are treated horribly and so, let’s not bring those poor folks into the discussion.

BORING
Anonymous | Aug 17, 2009 | Reply
Most bengali people are rude obnoxious miscreants whose sole purpose is to undermine others in an attempt to make their pitiful existence sound important…!
I am a British born Bangladeshi and I am not patriotic for the sake of being patriotic. I would be proud to be bengali if my country had something positive to talk about. I recently returned from a trip to Bangladesh where my opinions of Bangladeshi people were further confirmed.
My observations were as follows:
Firstly, the so called elite class based in Dhaka. They spend so much time smelling each others backsides they forget to put things into perspective and to remember that they are not really that ‘cool’ or ‘high status’. They spend so much time affirming each other when they actually meet ‘western bengalis’ they realise that they are stupid little bengalis with very little street cred. Nonetheless, they continue to roam the streets of dhaka in their toyota cars (only brand of car they know) which they probably bought with daddys bribe money he got from the dumb ass he hired at work who paid him 5K to get into his mediochre admin job.
Secondly, the poor people in Bangladesh, they are sometimes a menace to themselves. Whilst I agree that some are trying to make a decent life and survive the dirty politics of their country, some could try harder. For example, the women who send their children to beg and could easily get a house help job or the stupid rickshawala who would prefer to sit in his rickshaw then to make some money and take you somewhere closeby.
Thirdly, the obsession of bengali people with status and prestige. I mean what the hell is that all about? Why do they treat poor people so badly and why do they consider village people to be so low? In the UK, someone from the country might not be as ‘cool’ as someone from the city but it doesnt mean the two groups don’t socialise…!
I don’t see why these people have such bad egos, they should take a look aroud them and realise they are in a third world country and they can’t compete with the western world.
I think they need to stop living in a fantasy world and try to actually do something to make their country better. However, I doubt this is likely to happen as they are probably quite happy to live in their high rise apartments in Gulshan looking down on the poorer class who look for scraps of food in rubbish piles outside their front door. They are happy to get into a job by paying a bribe as getting an education is nothing short of a status symbol and not for the purpose of developing the mind and soul.
They are also happy to remain in their little bubble of ignorance whilst their country dissolves into turmoil, as long as they can drive their crappy toyota car into dhanmondi and eat nandos thinking they are ‘oh so cool’.
Sickening…

HMM. I am Bangali and I am proud of it.
I don’t understand why you all people just focusing on only few indicates of your life. You all telling about discrimination, so why don’t you see what happening around the world.
And Mr. Arnab, may be you have bad experience for recruiting and you have not found right person at right time? But is it right for only one or two issues, you are blaming a nation as RUDE. What I can say, Grapes are sour..
Yeah you will find other places where people are praising BANGALIS.
thanks,
Musfiq

Obviously, I am not basing my whole judgement on Bengalis on the basis of 1 incident. I have mentioned a series of other issues and also other people have mentioned their own problems with the culture.
Yes, there might be places where people are praising specifically Bengalis but that doesn’t change the fact that we lack proper etiquette.
Let’s not forget I am a Bengali myself.
btw, this was the 100th comment of this post. YaY!

You act as a pathetic person.
One of my best friends is Bengali and he is not rude. Only a week person can talk in general terms about the whole nation. It is you who thinks that he’s important. That is you problem.
Timur | Jan 2, 2010 | Reply
Aren’t you calling all Bengalis “not” rude on the basis of your experience with your friend?
admin | Jan 6, 2010 | Reply
Timur,
I don’t really understand what your point is, are you saying we shouldn’t consider them important?
It’s easy to say that ‘my friend is from so and so country’ but that is a pathetic argument in itself.
I think you should focus on what you consider to be ‘not rude’about the country.
Yes, we are generalising to an extent, but its difficult not to when you face rude people everywhere you go.
Timur, I am assuming you ARE bengali yourself and are hiding behind the age old, ‘my friend..’ argument/facade.
Please address the following issues before you so quickly brand people as pathetic:
1. Why is accepting bribes so easy for bangladeshi people. Taking into account I know of many people in desh who flatly refuse to accept bribes or give them, purely for their own moral conscience.
2. Why are bangladesh people obsessed with pointing out others faults…be that weight, height, skin tone (i.e the darker you are the less desirable), etc.
3. Why is there this class divide between villagers and city people – to the point that people from the villagers are so looked down on, they cannot go shopping in certain places or eat in certain restaurants.
4. Finally, why do the elite classes treat the 1) workers in their houses so badly i,e hitting, shouting and most forms of abuse that in developing countries you could take legal action for, 2) workers and CHILDREN so badly in the factories.
Timur, if you want to debate, I am more than happy to try to come to some sort of understanding. I generally love bangladeshi people, but I can’t help but notice the general rude culture of people.
I would love to improve our country, but its this ‘there is nothing wrong with bangaldesh’ mentality that causes the problems.
British people, as much as people criticise them, they always like to identify the problems within society and take pragmatic approaches to solve them, whereeas I feel bengali people are happy to brush their problems under the carpet and pretend nothing is wrong.

Hi Arnab:
Thanks for your comments.
First of, no, I’m not a Bengali and I’m not hiding from anything/anyone. What I’m saying is that any attempt to make any critical comments about any nation or its culture is a weak and one of the most pathetic things one can do. You look at the waves, not at the ocean. You see some small details but you ignore the meaning of the history. You should spend more time on reading some intelligent books about understanding human nature and less time on reading Java technologies or project management if your think you can say dirty things about any nation or any person for that matter (as you did referring to that guy that was interviewed by you. I think he had a right to ask for what ever he wanted to ask). I saw many people here in Canada in the big companies who came from other countries with different mentality and attitude but it takes time for them to realize that you are the same as others – home sapience.

Hi. I’m glad that you’ve sparked some serious debate here! I’m British Bangladeshi and I do recognise some of the traits you’re talking about. Yeah, I get some serious disrespect from relatives who don’t understand why I’m not married and if I must pursue a career it most be in accounting/teaching or something else suitable. In all fairness, that was nothing compared to the schtick I got from an Orthodox Jew I used to work with. What I really love is when Banglas go all out to do business with you once they realise you are too! I even had an indirect marriage proposal once, I had to put the phone down (after having it on speaker phone for my colleagues to taste our famous courtship rituals) because I was crying with laughter! It’s hilarious! My mother is totally brainwashed by these idiots and although I used to have a deep dislike of them; now I don’t care as they’re still running their shitty little taxis and balti houses and I’ve escaped all their crappy backward ways! My mother reckons no Bangla man will ever want to marry me…Au contraire, why would I want to shack up with that, mama?!
