I am sorry but some of you are so blinded by nationalism you have completely lost the ability to think straight.

You know I was talking to someone recently about the lynch mob attack on the two brothers in Pakistan. I expressed how disgusted I was and felt almost an ignorant solace that ‘bengali people are not as extreme as pakistanis’. How wrong I was! After speaking to some Bangladeshi born people they told me how lynching robbers was commonplace in Bangladesh. I did some of my own research and found that in Tongi, a gang of alleged robbers had been killed, hold on, not 2 but 6 people!!!

So my question to you is, that is this country you are so ready to embrace as being perfect, really that perfect? We should be happy that we are Muslim but when I think of the things people do as nations, I realise that national identity is actually quite pointless and pathetic!

I was actually quite set on moving to Bangladesh one day provided I could get my son into a good school however my dreams were further crushed when I found out a boy was killed by robbers who demanded 9 lac from the parents. They didn’t get the money so they killed the boy and buried him under a sandpit.

Living in the West – YES we do have problems but people here have not forgotten basic humanity and kindness – things that OUR religion teaches us.

We like to preach about our religion but we never want to put it in practice.

everyone is rude, some more than others. look at everyone arguing here. Im bengali…and my parents are the most kindest people on this earth, they let me marry who i wanted and do i wanted. and as soon i got married…i feel like im in a jail…my in laws have a shit mentality and its rubbing off on my husband…so now im turning bitter. but thats not because im bengali..its because im human. there are rituals and morals and opinions that we all wont agree on and thats everywere…if that wasnt the case we would be living so happily and laughing and joking all the time. u make ur own life..u live the way you want it. all humans are flawed.

I am very disappointed on your notion on Bangladesh and her people and furthermore it is a shame that you yourself being a part of Bangladeshi heritage wanted to taint the reputation of a nation. If you are not proud of your own heritage then you have no identity and not a worthy human being. Remember you can’t generalize and blame a whole nation for the attitude and behavior of some people of the same origin. You live in Canada and you should learn from Canada’s multicultural heritage how to be a tolerant and be an open minded individual.

Wel as i am a bengali it is quite true, what the above article says.
But my family are from sylhet especially where most bengalis are rude and not to be boastful we are the minority of people who care for everyone , i have a white sister- inlaw, and my family including me dont at all hate other races if we do go far into hating someone it would simply be coz of their disgraceful personality and behaviour. young boys and girls are disgrace to the bengali societ. ( mostly sylheti) i am young 15 and i just hate their disgusting behaviour, they do think they rule the world nation perhaps.
Newais i dont think different races come into the topic of bengalis being disrespectful, thats just them full stop, not that they hate other cultures. The story about your canadian friend, would just be your family is rude themselves, i know bengalis in desh are much more sweet than they are here.

Hi. I’m glad that you’ve sparked some serious debate here! I’m British Bangladeshi and I do recognise some of the traits you’re talking about. Yeah, I get some serious disrespect from relatives who don’t understand why I’m not married and if I must pursue a career it most be in accounting/teaching or something else suitable. In all fairness, that was nothing compared to the schtick I got from an Orthodox Jew I used to work with. What I really love is when Banglas go all out to do business with you once they realise you are too! I even had an indirect marriage proposal once, I had to put the phone down (after having it on speaker phone for my colleagues to taste our famous courtship rituals) because I was crying with laughter! It’s hilarious! My mother is totally brainwashed by these idiots and although I used to have a deep dislike of them; now I don’t care as they’re still running their shitty little taxis and balti houses and I’ve escaped all their crappy backward ways! My mother reckons no Bangla man will ever want to marry me…Au contraire, why would I want to shack up with that, mama?!
