World’s First Banner Ad!
By Arnab on Oct 3, 2007 in Internet
HotWired, world’s first commercial web magazine was launched around the end of 1994. Around that time, they wanted to do experiments with a new advertisement revenue strategy, which will become very common to today’s web. AT&T was the first company to put this ad into Hotwired’s website. Before we check out the ad, we should know that this is not only the first banner ad but also most probably the worst one used commercially. Well, I guess we could cut some slack for them since they created the first one ever. Therefore, here it goes.

Hi, just wanted to add that this banner has a special unused (at that time) size: 468px x 60px…. this has become a real standard in bannering experiences (now, changed into 728×90, screen resolutions are higher now

AT&T was one of about 14 banners that were with the launch of Hotwired. Three others were Volvo, Club Med and MCI, all clients of Euro RSCG. Volvo is a still a digital client of Euro RSCG.
