Using MagicJack from Toronto, Canada

Figure: Picture of MagicJack
Voice Over IP is becoming an interesting topic to discuss overtime. We see so many VOIP services popping up every where. People are becoming more open to using Skype and other services for their long distance rather than expensive landline phones.
Since there are so many services it’s becoming increasingly hard to choose the service that would be the most reliable of all. MagicJack is relatively a new player in the market. This device has been endorsed by various media for being very simple and also cheap. Basically, you get a small USB device that you plugin to your USB port and then you connect your phone jack to that device. After that you will be able to use MagicJack immediately. The device costs only $20 so far and the subscription cost is $20 per year. As part of your package you get a local phone number that other people would be able to call even from their landphones. For skype, it costs $60/year but with monthly subscription it’s $30/year.
After reading so many reviews against and in favour of this device I have finally decided to give this a shot.
I bought mine from the MagicJack Canada website. With shipping costs it came down to approximately $60. Apparently, we do not get to choose a local Canadian number yet. Still, we can get an American number and then switch to a Canadian local number as soon as it becomes available. I decided to switch to a cheaper cellphone plan and get this. Looked like a good deal.
It was very easy to install. My first problem was that I was not able to make any calls to toronto cellphones that had Rogers/Fido as the carrier. I could make calls to Rogers cellphones outside of Toronto but not in Toronto. It worked fine with bell and telus. It was a bit of problem for me since most of my friends use Rogers phones. It seemed to have been defeating the whole purpose of my purchase. I tried so many workaround for this. I talked to a bunch of people in the livechat and they couldn’t help me. After searching a lot I finally came accross a workaround for this.
Basically purpose of this post of mine is to help out those Toronto users of magicjack, who are having problems calling Rogers cellphones in Toronto. Basically, if you have a number let’s say, “416-123-4567″ you dial it like, “*67+4+*+16-123-4567. This seemed to have eliminated my problem.
MagicJack is very new and it has lots of bugs. However, I believe you get what you pay for. I paid 40 bucks for the first year and 20 bucks per year after that. I do not expect a landline experience out of this. On the other hand, the cellphone carriers charge us a way more than they should. I don’t get enough out of my money from them. Therefore, with magicjack, be patience and think about the money you are saving. Also, you are becoming known to a new technology that not a lot of people are familiar with.
So, goodluck with MagicJack. If you are from Toronto and a magicjack user, give me a shout and I will give you my number and we can have a chat in our magicjack
. Even if you are not a Torontonian but just wants to talk to me shout anyways and we can talk.

Fascinating, about the MagicJack number issue…how did you find out the fix? I’m curious, I’ve been trying to call my little sister in Toronto on her cell and it’s been failing badly, and it’s a 416 number…their tech support never said anything about a special dialing process, though. Do you know why it’s that way?

Hi, I just wanted to thank you for the tip with cell phones. I am a magic jack user in montreal and i had issue calling cells with fido/rogers too. Actually i dont know anybody with bell or telus so I couldnt say if it would actually work.
But anyway the same tip applies for us in Montreal
lets say 514 123 4567 you dial *67 5* 14 1234567.
thanks again man.

My gf is having the same issue,
shes using the phone connected to her magic jack and typing 67 and my number after its not working?
Ronald | Aug 12, 2008 | Reply
Hey everyone, thanks for all the nice comments. I am just too freaking busy with exams and that’s why couldn’t get back to you all. I am certainly happy that I could help.
Anyways, Ronald, you will have to type in like this…*67+4*16123456
If you type in your number directly after *67 it won’t work…after the first number you have include another “*”. Hope that solves the issue
Yes, Victor you guys are doing a great job providing MagicJack here in Canada. Hopefully, you will be able to fix the issue with Toronto cellphones.

Hey Rene,
Thanks for your comments/question.
I was having the same issue initially but then after I fixed it through the volume control panel.
However, that didn’t work for you I suppose. I would say if you are using a cordless try using a corded phone or something. Definitely the voice quality increase for me when I use a cord phone.
Another thing that also strongly matters is your internet. A lot of internet has a very low uploading speed and I suspect that limits the capability of a smooth outgoing conversation.
One site to check your internet for VOIP is testyourvoip.com
Give this a shot. Let me know if you have any other issues. Thanks

Thanks for the tip on the cellphone. Another issue i noticed on my majicjack is that the whenever i make a call, the number that shows up on the receiver’s caller id is different than my assigned number.
For ex. if my number is 416-123-4567 it shows up as 416-123-5567 on the caller id display of the called number. Does anyone else have the same issue?
Apparantly after my chat online with the support, MJ Engineers are working on the issue…

In Toronto, calling a Rogers cell, no problem, so they must have fixed the problem. Had mine since April. No problems until 2 days ago. MJ must have brought in a new upgrade. On Rogers Internet at home. Could not download the upgrade, even after talking to MJ live chat. Brought MJ to work, plugged it into USB and downloaded upgrade. Work is on an business only internet isp. Only can think that Rogers is blocking the upgrade.

I have started having problems with my magicjack, when I am using it, it goes on hold and I have to hit the resume button and then it will go on hold again. The person on the other end hears music. It has also restarted on it’s own or just disappears from the task bar. Anyone else having these problems?

I have a 647 cell number with Rogers. I tried the *67 6*47 xxx xxxx with cell phone in hand, but it did not ring and the magicJack call went straight to Rogers voicemail. I tried *67 1 647 xxx xxxx and it worked! You can see that I simply added the 1 before the area code and did not use * after the first number of the area code. Thanks for pointing me in a direction. Customer support at magicJack had nothing to offer in that regard. Oh, and receiving calls to my magicJack NEW YORK number sucks considering that I am in Mississauga.
—————
Also, I tried sending a fax from my modem into the magicJack, but the transmission could not complete.

I am hearing that MJ has not assigned Canadian phone numbers yet? The guy in Hamilton is he out of business, there is no contact on his web, and his mailbox is full on his phone number? I am more concerned whether MJ is assigning valid phone #’s here in Canada. My area code is 905, any problems with anyone in this area? Thanks for the information, I will order one…but I guess from the USA.

I had my magicjack since July and experienced the same problem about not being able to dial to Roger’s cell phone users. I surmise that enough of us complained to their online tech support that they actually did something to resolve the issue. However, I am still not able to choose a Canadian Area code. I talked to the online support and they said they should have Canadian area codes in a few months..I think realistically, it might take a bit longer as they are currently still working on certain American area codes if you look at the official website. But all in all,MJ is a good product considering the price and i save a lot of money from NOT using my Roger’s cell phone at home as we ALL know our cell phone companies are gouging us with their “system access fees” and overpriced monthly plans.

I’ve had my magicjack since May 2008. I am a Canadian working in the US, so calls home get a bit pricey. I’m visiting home, just outside of Toronto, and calling rogers home phones or cell phones don’t appear to be an issue for me. I do get a little delay and occasional choppiness in the audio, regardless of where I am using the device. Is this common? Is there any way to fix?

If you can deal with the not so good reception, and hope that they get Canadian area codes soon, the reception might get better for local calls. But the question is when??? I would hold off on buying one until they get Canadian area codes because you can make calls but no one will want to phone you, they will be charged long distance.

Hello
I have been using the magic jack for about 4 months. its not perfect but its good and well worth the money. Its is unfortunate that I bought the magic jack after reading on themagicjack.ca that once Canadian numbers where available that you could switch to a Canadian number free of charge. Now the Canadian numbers are here and so much for switching for free. the free charge has turned into $59.00. Is that similar to false advertizing?

I ordered the Canadian MagicJack September 22nd 2008 on the Canadian Web Site before the Canadian numbers were available (VISA $56.99 tax & shipping incl). Received it in the mail Sept-25-08. Installed it and was working on a US Tel Number immmediatley.
Sept-25-08 registered as an Affiliate Member and Sept-26-08 approved as an Affiliate so I created an ICON on my web site.
So far so good.
Then in the last week the Canadian numbers became available. I went to the Canadian MagicJack web site an ordered a Canadian number Oct-13-08 ($62.99 incl tax) claiming 48 hours it will be working. By Oct-17-08 I hadn’t heard anything so I called that afternoon. No answer on Victor’s, Service or Order lines. Maiboxes all full. I sent an email Oct-17-18. No response. Oct-19-08 received an email saying that I have a Canadian number but it was a Florida Area Code.
Continued to call all weekend, maiboxes still full.
Monday Oct. 20 got through to Victor at MagicJack. He said they screwed up on issuing Canadian Numbers. By noon Oct-20 I got a Canadian number. I still have the US number for dialing out and the Canadian number receivs calls inbound. So outdialing shows up on Caller ID as my New York US number.
I tested my web site for my Affiliate access and it no longer works, so it is a broken link. I went to the Canadian MagicJack web page and clicked on the Affiliate link and it is a broken link. The Canadian order info for a Canadian number at the MagicJack web site is gone. I sent an email to Victor at MagicJack and the email bounced back as undeliverable. I called and there is no answer and the mailboxes are full and won’t take messages.
So there you are. Go for it.

i just got my magicjack from themagicjack.ca. i will try it tonight but i activated it ok at work. we have a firewall at work so i can use it there. i noticed, as per the previous post, that the canadian number order link is gone. i just called the 877 number and i got voice mail so its possible to leave vmail. i was able to speak with victor last week and he was very stressed as the phones were ringing off the hook behind him. im hoping that its just that they are over loaded with orders. if i like the magicjack i will consider getting a canadian number and hopefully victor and co will come through. i’ll let you know…

We Have Canadian Local Numbers & 911 Service Working!
Themagicjack.ca is just a Canadian distributor.
Well so is Canadianmagicjack.ca
No matter what VICTOR says!
But we do not sell Magic Jacks we give them away for “FREE” with every new purchase of a Canadian Local Number!
Thats two bad that the Canadian Numbers link is down for Themagicjack.ca I wish them the best of luck.
If you do the math it costs $13.84 more to buy a Magic Jack and a Canadian local number from Themagicjack.ca then it does from Canadianmagicjack.ca
Cheers,
Neil Adams
P.S. People who think that $99.99 per year plus tax from Canadianmagicjack.ca
or
$56.99 plus tax & shipping from Themagicjack.ca is too expensive should re-think that because just look what it costs to get the same service with TELUS, BELL OR ROGERS.
Your looking at over $600 a year!
NEIL ADAMS | Oct 25, 2008 | Reply
That’s great. More competition is always good. However, what if you already have a magicjack? How much would you charge to get a local Toronto number?
Bell & Rogers charge a lot for cellphones, true. I 100% agree. However, magicjack is not to the perfection. If you are downloading a movie or browsing on let’s say youtube you can’t use the phone at all.
I guess you get what you pay for. I do think that the Canadian local number is just a bit expensive.

Themagicjack.ca definitely missed the boat on Canadian numbers. It will only be a matter of time before magicjack.com wipes both of you out anyway. For now, canadianmagic.ca is more appealing to the consumer–the jack is thrown in for free and there is no awkward two-step purchase process that Themagicjack.ca advertised online last week if only for a brief moment. Let the games begin!!!

I just received a refund for my Canadian number from Victor at http://www.themagicjack.ca/.
I don’t know what’s going on there but I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place with a U.S. number and a broken Canadian number that no longer rings my MagicJack phone.
If I go to http://www.canadianmagicjack.ca/ for a Canadian number I’m not sure if they will make me buy another MagicJack or if they will let me us my existing MagicJack (purchased from themagicjack.ca) to apply for a Canadian number. The technology is great, but the administration is a nightmare. I just want a working Canadian number.
Maybe Comwave is the way to go, http://www.comwave.net/CDN/iPhone/index.htm

Gprice, yes, Themagicjack.ca has a new notice posted about the availability of Canadian numbers again in two weeks but that could mean two months, two years or never. Their advertising has never been accurate. You should talk to canadianmagicjack.ca about your dilemma. The worst thing that could happen is you could end up with two magicjacks, two american numbers and one canadian number. Use the american number magicjack for outgoing calls–one at home and one in your workplace.

Hey Corweez, I hear you when you say wait with our American numbers but where would we get to change for free to Canadian numbers if we originally bought our MagicJacks from these Canadian clone companies that you say won’t be around much longer? Who is going to honour our investment to get the Canadian numbers? Someone has already suggested to buy new MagicJacks (i.e. from the American web site) and use the other MagicJack we have for home or office use. It’s probably time to go to the Better Business Bureau with all these stories and start letting the public know that there is some questionable business going on out there with these MagicJack Companies.

Does that now mean I have to pay $56.99 to Themagicjack.ca to get the unit and then $99 to canadianmagicjack.ca for a Canadian number??
That is just wrong and a total flip flop on what Neil Adams was advertising as a selling feature.

Interesting response Neil…
On October 25th (posted above) you’re advertising the Magic jack as included free and so your cheaper than the other company…the Canadian dollar was at about $0.78 USD
results (1 CAD)
October 22, Wednesday 0.800256 USD
October 23, Thursday 0.795355 USD
October 24, Friday 0.785238 USD
October 27, Monday 0.773096 USD
October 28, Tuesday 0.772678 USD
Now your saying…
“Since the Canadian $ has going down Canadianmagicjack.ca can no longer offer the free magicjack deal!”
But the Canadian dollar is even higher now at $0.81 USD
results (1 CAD)
November 12, Wednesday 0.813273 USD
November 13, Thursday 0.812282 USD
November 14, Friday 0.816927 USD
I understand that “terms” change without notice but please be honest about them and treat customers fairly!

Your right Neil, I am not a current customer…I WAS a potential new customer – your arrogance and pompous attitude nixed my purchase real quick.
You were very quick to point out the short comings of themagicjack.com and proclaim yourself Jack King by saying it cost $13.84 more to buy a Magic Jack and a Canadian local number from Themagicjack.ca then it does from Canadianmagicjack.ca. Yet less than 2 weeks later the actual cost to use your service is $56.99 for the MJ and $99 to you for a total of $155.99! Going by your math that is $43.14 more expensive than Themagicjack.ca.
Nice try with back-peddling “Canadianmagicjack.ca “Apologizes” to any new potential customer for not giving them the “time frame” of our 1st promotion.” Nowhere did you even remotely infer this was a “promotion” – your earlier posting of a free MJ stated it boldly as a “matter of fact” which smugly made you #1. When called on it you blamed the Canadian dollar and when that argument blew up in your face you changed your rationale to “promotional”. How convenient.
Thank you but I will save my $43 dollars and take my custom to a more reputable dealer who is up front and honest.

I was asking questions like everyone else about the Canadian numbers. The Better Business Bureau Complaint, so far has been lodged against themagicjack.ca. I can say one thing about canadianmagicjack.ca and that is I will never become a customer by what I have seen in these messages. I was trying to get a new Canadian number after themagicjack.ca refunded my money and removed my Canadian number. Thus, the discussion began on how this can be done. Good grief man. With every response your business gets more and more questionable. Careful you don’t dig any deeper the hole may be too big to climb out of.
I personally will wait the few weeks and get a Canadian number through themagicjack.ca or magicjack.com when available – yes it is taking them longer to get numbers but at least they have not tried to snowball anyone like this.

Hi this is the CEO of CANADIANMAGICJACK.CA LTD or Mr. Neil Adams…our company only has 26 customers since OCT 30, 2008.
We have no partnerships with MAGICJACK.COM, LP, YMAX..
Nor do we want to!
On there website: Magicjack.com shows all of our provinces in CANADA! on there site…so you think as a new Canadian customer that there must be a Canadian number that comes with it….Magicjack.com has been giving Canadians the run around with this since late 2007…Ok we have Canadian Numbers…oh no we don’t …oh yes we do…oh wait a sec…aaaa….next month…no wait no.. Canadian Numbers are coming and no there is not an exact date for this.
Talk about selling them just to make a buck.
What CANADIANMAGICJACK.CA LTD was told is that its going to be the first week in “JAN 2009″ that they are going to have them.
CANADIANMAGICJACK.CA LTD calls their bluff.
This is CRAP…
So we will be the first to keep things real and step up to the plate.
#1. Pick up your Magicjack see how it says “TM” well that is not the case in CANADA!
They only applied for (TM) in Canada on 13 May 2008.
http://www.ic.gc.ca/app/opic-cipo/trdmrks/srch/vwTrdmrk.do;jsessionid=0000EwojhTThalyCf4S6eFoIu8Q:1247nfca5?lang=eng&fileNumber=1395385&extension=0&startingDocumentIndexOnPage=1
We found out about this on OCT 29, 2008.
DR.SING and Mr.Borislow knows about the email we have from both of them dated (Thursday, May 08, 2008 3:45 AM Subject: SMALL WORLD) later on that day..see above .
That said…
30/10/08
As of today CANADIANMAGICJACK.CA LTD
is now a Federal Corporation and registered
with http://strategis.ic.gc.ca or Industry Canada.
15/11/08
CANADIANMAGICJACK.CA LTD has taken the
first steps and made a application to the C.R.T.C.
to become a Competitive Local Exchange Carrier.
After that…
kraM lovaP
President of Direct Connect Communications (Consultant)
Sent us a email wanting a CANADIAN Local Number.
After finding out that it was Mark (Nice Try Mark)
We called them back and “Peter and Mark” told us that they didn’t want us to sell Canadian Numbers and if we didn’t stop they would take the next steps.
We said to bad CANADIANMAGICJACK.CA LTD will not stop selling Canadian Local Numbers to Canadians just because you can not.
And we hung up on them.
That said…
They took the next steps and stopped everyone from selling CANADIANMAGICJACK.CA LTD Magic Jacks at the resellers price or wholesale price.
Just ask ED the owner at Proactive Events!
SO LET THE “TRUTH BE TOLD” IT WILL SET YOU FREE…
This is how our company is still able to sell Magic Jack and why Magicjack LP can not figure out how we are still doing it…
CANADIANMAGICJACK.CA LTD pays “Full Retail” price for our Magicjacks and makes no money off of them.
CANADIANMAGICJACK.CA LTD has no partnership with THEMAGICJACK.CA
So when a customer buys a Magic Jack from CANADIANMAGICJACK.CA LTD you will see it is the same price as THEMAGICJACK.CA price.
We just pay MAGICJACK.COM or THEMAGICJACK.CA the same retail price as you do… as if you went there yourself and paid for it .
CANADIANMAGICJACK.CA LTD is the only company as of today’s date that can offer Canadians a Canadian Local Number on there Magicjack when both MAGICJACK.COM & THEMAGICJACK.CA can not!
We sell Canadian Local Numbers not Magic Jacks and that is how CANADIANMAGICJACK.CA LTD pays our bills.
Cheers,
Neil Adams

P.S.
When Magicjack.com does come out with “Canadian Local Numbers” you will have to change your “USA Number” to a “Canadian Number”.
So that means if you have friends that live in the USA they will not be able to call you for free anymore on your USA # because you will have to change it to a Canadian number only!
With Canadianmagicjack.ca you will be able to have 2 numbers:
USA Local Number & Canadian Local Number#

Neil: but here is my question
Brent: Hello Neil.
Brent: Yes Neil.
Neil: When Canadin numbers do come out will I have to change my USA number to a Canadain one?….thanks
Brent: Yes Neil. Once Canadian numbers is available Neil, you can change your US number to any Canadian number once for free.
Neil: ok but does that mean i don’t have my old USA number anymore?
Brent: Yes Neil. Once you change it to Canadian number.
Neil: So I lose my USA number right?
Brent: Yes Neil. Since you change you replace your US number with Canadian number.
Neil: That’s not any good
Neil: is there a way to have both of them at the same time if i pay two times?
Brent: I do apologize Neil, that feature with two magicjack numbers will not be available.
Neil: no just one magicjack and it can ring both USA and Canadian number on same magicjack
Brent: I do apologize again Neil, having two magicjack numbers with one magicjack is not yet possible.
Brent: You may have two magicjack for two magicjack numbers.
Neil: but that would cost over $125 USD to set that up
Neil: with taxes and shipping and duty to Canada if I got 2 magic jacks
Brent: We do not have the estimated costs as of the moment Neil.
Neil: And I only have 1 computer and you can’t use 2 magicjack on the same computer
Neil: ok thank you for your time
Brent: We will keep you informed once it is available.

Basically, if you have a number let’s say, “416-123-4567″ you dial it like, “*67+4+*+16-123-4567. This seemed to have eliminated my problem.
The above trick worked for me but not anymore.
today I couldn’t dial like that.

The problem for dial Rogers & Fido Cell Phone in Toronto, with *67 code, happend after upgrading the MJ for me Dec24, but i Solved it, to make your MJ able to call Rogers or Fido Cell in Toronto again follow it:
1- download the peravios version of MJ firmware from this Link & save it on your harddisk: http://www.4shared.com/file/77470108/b830c9e1/MagicJack-Downgrade.html
2- disconnect your computer from internet (very important).
3- don’t unplug or disconnect your magicjack from your computer.
4- run the Magicjack-Downgrade.exe
5- after finishing downgrading, your MJ softphone appear again, but you will see Error 3(Maybe) on it, no problem.
6- connect your comnputer to Internet again & restart the Mj software from Menu->Advance User-> Restart
7- Now you can again call to Rogers & Fido Cell phone in Toronto again by adding *67 code as you knew it.
Sorry for some problem in my writing in English. I’m Persian & English is my Second language & i’m just a bignner…

I had an upgrading notice when I booted computer this morning, I now am having troubles conecting to many Toronto based numbers, all I get is back to dial tone.(tried the same numbers with my land/cell and got thru every time so busy is not the problem here. Never had any issues with connecting until this upgrade.
The dial tone is a nuisance when the number is busy, why cant MJ give is a busy signal?
Bingo | Jan 1, 2009 | Reply
Hi Dear Bingo
I’m living in Toronto, i Tested MJ right now, it worked fine with Toronto Cell & Land line.
If you have still problem, remove your MJ from your computer for 2 min, connect it again. after Softphone screen appear, from menu->advance user, select restart, then you must be able to dial Toronto cell & Landline.
if you still had problem, download MJ update from this link & run it.

Looks like MagicJack did fix the Toronto-cell phone problem, but it works only some of the times. Like today I tried a number 6 times, out of which 5 were false rings, and it connected through only once. The person I called didn’t get any of my 5 calls.
I’ve restarted it a couple of times, but that didn’t help, and I still kept getting false rings. Anyone else having this problem?

Upon reading the posts here, MagicJack should be changed to MagicJerk. I was on the verge of buying a MagicJack until I read about all the problems and no Toronto or other Canadian phone number availability. It’s unfortunate that such a potentially good device and service is ruined by very poor business practises and technical support.

Hello,
I have been told by the C.R.T.C. that…
YMAX, MAGICJACK LP or MagicJack.com can only file as a reseller in Canada.
(They have not even done that yet… as of today’s date.)
They can not become a (CLEC) or a Competitive Local Exchange Carrier since they are a USA COMPANY.
( (CLEC) or a Competitive Local Exchange Carrier… means a phone company in CANADA! )
If anyone does not believe the statement I have just made above… do not take my word for it until you have contacted the C.R.T.C. and asked them yourself if this is true or not.
Here is the Toll-free number for the C.R.T.C. : 1-877-249-CRTC (2782)
CANADIANMAGICJACK.CA LTD is now a Proposed CLEC as seen on the C.R.T.C.’s website :
http://support.crtc.gc.ca/tlcmlsts/default.aspx?indx=40&lang=e
Once you click on the link above scroll down to the bottom of the page.
I hope this will clear the air once and for all.

I spoke with 2 people on the live help , they wer really nice ,and very professional but this does not excuse the end result.
Saying “sorry sir” , doesnt quite cut it for me…. This is not about money ,or the time I spent with the 2 live agent tonight ,but is only about false advertising and being cheated into buying something that I can use only outgoing , since all incoming calls go to new york ….
God I wish I saw this website before buying this product…

I have a quick question to anyone who can answer it. While “local” numbers are available…. the local numbers are only for major cities, (ie Halifax in my case). We live about 2 hours from Halifax and for us Halifax is a long distance location with our current provider.
The question in… If I purchase a local Halifax number from Canadianmagicjack.ca, will people calling into our home from the local area be paying long distance as they would now pay long distance to Halifax?
Thanks in advance for you help,

Blew the wad and purchased a MagicJack even though there were some bad experiences in the forums… figured what are you gonna lose if only $20bux a month after you buy the little box.
Well it worked as advertised… two things are evident… me thinks it’s susceptible to RF interference so use one of those DSL filters, might even make a linear choke by wrapping 20 turns of phone line in a coil or put in a ferrite bead or two if you have any… and do NOT surf the net while on the phone… both Cable and DSL are asynchronous, meaning your upload speed ( and when you talk) is quite slow… Shaw only gives 450K upload even on a 7.5mb high speed service.
Yeah… a Canadian phone number would sure be nice, not sure what the hold up is.. seems like a no-brainer… other parasitic VoIP services like Vonage and Primus or the dedicated service like Shaw’s home phone service can manage to reserve a pool of numbers for their customers, so why not MagicJack?

using a magicjack is a no-brainer.
I am saving $700.00 CDN per year. who cares about not having a Canadian phone number? and the fact that someone calling me has to pay between .03 and .07 cents per minute for long distance. If they are really that broke or worried about it costing them .50 cents to talk to me for ten minutes, they can call me and hang up, i will call right back if i feel like talking to the cheap idiot.
anyone that has trouble with getting the thing to work has not read the instructions. firewall settings must be right, net-nanny or other isp blocking software has to be set up properly. sound settings have to be set right, and the crappy operating system called windows has to behave it self. if your isp is throttling your connection, that is not a magicjack fault, it is your fault for using a crappy provider.

Thanks for the info here. I have been following this product for a LONG time now, at first thinking it was a scam, but it really looks like they are becoming a major player.
On the Rogers issues, I suspect we all know what the answer is… Once they do finally get the ability to PORT Canadian numbers with your own AREA CODE, this thing is GOING TO VIRTUALLY KILL ROGERS HOME PHONE over time!!
Does anyone have proof that Rogers is intentionally attemptimg to block outside calls into their network from MAGIC JACK users?? or make it as difficult as possible for them???
I would NOT put this past them. But would this be LEGAL??

I carry my magic jack around the world
It readily connects me to the free north american long distance service. Additionally my son has one also – in australia. Both of us have setup our units so they have a Florida area code. We easly connect to one another though via MJ itself. He calls his canadian home for free daily.
Beats Ma Bell, Telus and Primus by a country mile…. best thing since sliced bread

why is everyone hung up on getting a Canadian number?
It really is unnecessary. MJ allows you to call Long Distance for free anywhere in USA and Canada.
Dont treat it as a absolute replacement for a telcom service. Just get MaBell’s basic no frills service if you wish local people to reach you without calling the MJ US number.
Another benefit – no marketing calls if you register with the US no-call service. Unlike Canada’s no-call service whioch has holes in it.

tech probs – I wonder if impatience has alot to do with the issues being raised here.
I dont have any operating probs with MJ. enclosed instructions suggest disconnecting your router once a month – but I have not done that. I unplug it from the USB when not in use and I put it back into the SAME usb slot everytime. Neither norton nor my firewall are involved.
You have to let it self-install and wait until you see the ad panel and the 911 light operate to know you are properly connected.
AND if you want to – drive over to Buffalo and get a MJ from their local Radio Shack store and stop messing around with the postal service or intermediary sellers.

I need your help please. My magicJack kept working with my own computer whenever I plugged it to the same USB port. But two days ago I unplugged and re-plugged it few hours later but didn’t work. On its screen panel i receive the message “WARNING: you must plug MagicJack into USB”. I plug it in different USB ports but receive the same message. I plugged the Magic Jack into another computer USB port several times, it worked alright.Has anybody faced with the same issue and how to fix this problem, please.

Alan, plug in the magicjack usb directly rather than through the “hub” that comes with it. If it doesn’t work then your device is busted…u need to contact the customer service and order a new one.

Hi, Can someone can please help us? We live in Mexico, heard a lot about MagicJack, want to buy a MagicJack device in the USA because you can’t get one down here, and take it back to Mexico.
Our family lives in the Toronto area and we therefore want to get a 416 Area Code base phone no. so that we and they can use it to contact each other.
Question:
How do we go about obtaining this 416 Area Code base phone no? from whom? how? where? and at what cost?
We have contacted the Vancouver based Canadian MagicJack website by e-mail, as you cannot get a hold of them by phone, but we cannot get a straight answer from them.
Hopefully you can answer the question for us. Thank you and we are looking forward to your reply. Regards.

Yes, most 905 and 416 numbers can be called without long distance charges from a 647 area code.

Is it busted or ….???? I need help, please

do u have a firewall? It’s most probably your firewall dat’s blocking the connection. You should talk to magicjack customer support and they will help you unblock it.
For now, you can disable ur firewall and use ur MJ.

well I don’t think things will ever get better I have a magic jack with an area code in Arizona and any one who calls it the call is forwarded to my Canadian # and that works the fact is this is its cheep and makes a second phone with free long distance and that is worth the price .
It is so true every one is looking for something for nothing and that won’t happen trust me ; Eric
Eric Cymbaliuk | Jun 30, 2009 | Reply
I had Magic Jack for about 2 months, and this thing is awesome, it’s a US # forwarded to my cdn cell, and I only use it to make outgoing calls to the US and Canada. I never had a landline and now i definitely never will.
One thing I noticed is that I have Rogers Hispeed and use their antivirus software, they changed from norton and the firewall blocks MJ, even when you tell it to allow MJ, it still wasnt allowing MJ fully, so I just disable their firewall and use the windows firewall.
David | Jul 3, 2009 | Reply
All they need is broadband with a 128 minimum upspeed, and MJ will work flawlessly
David | Jul 3, 2009 | Reply
If you use the Rogers safety software, their firewall is the culprit, disable it and use the windows firewall

Sahiti, sorry I am not sure what you are asking.
U have a landphone currently, which is a cordless? You don’t want a land phone anymore?
If that’s the case, just simply connect MJ to your cordless phone. You don’t need MJ in all three computers unless you want three completely different numbers.
Just connect MJ & phone to one of your computers with internet access and you are fine.

I was in desperate need to call some customers in Canada before I lost their business. I looked into getting a land line and many other ways to talk with them. I was told that the Magic jack would let me make calls to Canada for free. I bought one $40.00 I think I get the first year free, I thought it was free, period. Not to worry, this is so awesome I got to my laptop plugged it in and it installed all by itself. I made a call to Canada right away. We talked for well over an hour FOR FREE. I will be buying these and “giving” them to my Canada customers so we can talk for free and they can use it too. I did have a slight issue with the sound at a couple points in our conversation. It sounded like she was talking into a high speed fan. But it left as quickly as it came. I am so happy, this helped save a “dill” that I might have lost.
Thank you so much,
have a blessed day.

For everyone out there thinking about getting an ATA box from Canadian Magic Jack, just a little bit of warning. I ordered the ATA and a local phone number 6 weeks ago. It took 4 weeks to get the phone adapter after many calls to customer service (and leaving voice mails).
The phone adapter finally arrived and 3-4 days later I got the local number. But while I can dial out without problem, incoming calls are still not working. The problem is that the Linksys SPA1001 phone adapter doesn’t like to be behind a router. Linksys recommends a newer version that Canadian MagicJack doesn’t ship.
Plus is that you can get local Canadian numbers and they work if you can get them to work but beware of customer service. If you have a problem, you may not get a call back.
My two cents. Hope this helps someone.

kelvin,
Assuming that you are talking about Canadian Magic Jack out of Vancouver, my response would be that you will receive your magic jack. They do exist and do ship out either Magic Jacks or like I got, the ATA box. The problem is that you have to keep calling them. They’re probably understaffed and often don’t respond to emails or phone messages. This makes the experience very frustrating. If you do not receive anything soon (after making attempts to call them, you can always file a grievance with PayPal. PayPal will open a diaglogue with the vendor and try to find a resolution.
My final comment would be that Canadian Magic Jack is not looking to rip you off, you just need to understand that they lack adequate customer support. This may be rectified in the future but is the reality today.
Hope this helps.

I’ll try to explain it to you. As far as I know,
there were two companies selling Magic Jacks, one in Vancouver and one in Hamilton. But they were separate companies. You bought from the one in Hamilton. I bought my service from the one in Vancouver. Two different companies. Now, I believe I read that the one in Vancouver bought the one in Hamilton but I could be wrong.
I suggest you contact the Vancouver based one at http://www.Canadianmagicjack.ca and see if they can help you. Paypal might be able to help only if you paid for your Magic Jack with the PayPal service. If not, then I don’t know what your recourse would be.
Hope this helps.

Well, Nick, that is very unkind of you NOT to support the people who bought their magicjacks from Hamilton.
I, for one, will NOT be buying your product because of all the problems that people on this forum have been sharing.
It seems that you have a decent product, but that your customer support is woefully inadequate and there are some problems also with your product NOT performing as indicated. I do hope you guys get your act together and start getting your products and customer support in better shape.
Right now, I don’t see that in your business, and I will tell everyone I know NOT to buy from you.

I was having problems with my Toronto number, Canadian Magic Jack fixed the problem and gave me a more time (to cover out of service time). The time it takes to reply could be improved though and hopefully it will get better. I actually like having US and Canadian numbers. My MJ is connected to a cordless and works very well. You can’t beat the price!!
Ray | Aug 8, 2009 | Reply
Yes, I agree. Having a Toronto number is very appealing. As you mentioned, I don’t have a problem with the service per say but rather the customer support. My worry is that if something goes wrong and you call them for support, you may not get a call back. And then what?
There are other providers in both Ontario and Quebec that offer similiar services but when you call them, someone answers. That may be another option.

There is another company (Au Group Electronics) in Niagara Region selling magicJack. Their price is relatively lower and their customer support is decent. If you live around that area, you can also arrange pick up with them to save the shipping and handling cost.
My magicJack was expired at the end of July, but I do not have a credit card to pay magicJack for the renewal service. They did it for me.

I been using this a year no problem what so ever… They also come with a softphone where I can use it on my computer.
Oh did I tell you I can use this on my Nokia N95 also? All I need to do is use an software called “Fring” (www.fring.com). I was in Vancouver on April, and I called back to Toronto… without long distance or Roaming charges with my Cell Phone… Because I am using VoIP on my cell phone. I also just started with the acanac internet service. $18.95 / month plus $8.00 for a dryloop. So far so good. Cheaper than Bell Sympatico with unlimited downloading. I will probably try their VOIP service with a Toronto number because I can’t get service from Canadian Magic Jack out of Vancouver. I want to return their ATA box but can’t get them to provide a return mailing address. Frustrating.
So next step is to get PayPal involved. They offer some protection if the vendor doesn’t resolve the problem.
We’ll see.

It’s useless for incoming calls…..or to pretend it can replace your land line or VOIP product from Primus or Vonage, who DO have Canadian area codes!

Roger’s new internet protection service blocks the packets for the Majicjack service over the internet. You have to turn off the “Rogers Online Protection” to complete your calls. I tried to tweak RPS by allowing the packets but each time a different socket gets used. I just put my MJ on another computer using non Rogers Protection. As an almost free after purchase long distance phone service, this produce cannot be beat. You do need a good internet service plan for it to function well. I also use multiple wireless phones with my MJ no problem. I do not expect the US co. will ever be able to supple Canandian no. for free. That doesn’t brother me. But they do need to be more upfront about the problems they are facing in accessing Canadian no.s

I’ve been trying to register my MJ but i cannot go thru. I’m at that page where it asks for the shipping/billing address. I am in Canada and it doesn’t take the postal address that we have. Is there a fix for this? Thanks!

According to the most recent reseller newsletter, you should be able to change your US phone number to a Canadian phone number (there will be a US$10 one time fee). It looks like 514 is on the list.
Here are a list of current available Canadian area codes:
Canadian Area Codes
(Updated November 19, 2009)
Status Location Code
Available Manitoba – Winnipeg 204
Available Ontario – Hamilton 905
Available Ontario – London 226
Available Ontario – Niagara Falls 289
Available Ontario – Ottawa 613
Available Ontario – Toronto 416
Available Ontario – Windsor 519
Available Quebec – Montreal 514
Available Quebec – Quebec City 418
The following is part of the reseller newsletter:
“Canadian Area Codes Are Now Available!
magicJack now has local area codes available in the Provinces of Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba and has plans to expand shortly to most parts of Canada.
The available area codes are:
204, 905, 226, 289, 613, 416, 519, 514, and 418.
There is a $10.00 one time charge to obtain a Canadian area code.

Effectivly if you loock for a code 514 or any other one in Canada, MajicJack gives you the availability but not the option to change it even in paying 10 dollars, it just put on the screen the option of. US aera code and none of Canadian.
Any body have better info

I did have a client got a new magicjack with Windsor phone number: 519-800-xxxx.
So, for new magicjack user, this is definitely good news, I don’t know how long it will take to allow existing user to get a Canadian phone number.
It seems only limited area code in Ontario, Manitoba, and Quebec province are available.
The other bad thing for US magicJack user is: all area codes in new york city are no longer available since the beginning of this year. Anyone knew a reason?

From my experience, when I was activating the magicJack for my client (Windsor ON), there is a list of numbers to choose, you need pick one during the activation process.
(Even for US phone number, that list of number will cost you, not remember how much is that, should be around US$10. Otherwise you will get a random number without extra charge.)
F.N. | Dec 5, 2009 | Reply
For a small fee you can look for your prefered choice like with google voice
Sam Smith | Dec 6, 2009 | Reply
Google voice is really good, but it is only available for USA customers.
(It will detect the IP address, and only allow USA IP address to active the service.)

Even though the reseller news letter says the “USD$10″ is a one time fee, but I am still not sure, since you cannot tell from the order confirmation letter (Please refer to the email screen print in the following link).

During the activation, it says “I want a Canadian Number for $10 a year” instead of the reseller news letter “One time fee”. Please be aware of the difference.
So, it seems to be US$29.95/year for Canadian phone numbers, instead of US$19.95/year for USA phone numbers.

I was informed by a Majic Jack tech support agent, I believe but I am not completely certain that it was prior to purchase, that I would be able to change the US area code to a Canadian area code at no additional charge, once they were avaliable, one time only. There would be a charge to change from the 1st Canadian area code once I had it, to a difference one. That was a clear and unmistakalbe term of the agreement made by a representative of Majicjack. I’m not going to hold them to it but I would think that anyone they told this to should be given a Canadian area code as stated by the company representative and as obviously instructed to say such by the principals of Majicjack. Anyway, I am quite satisfied with using the MJ as is. One minor item I may already have reported on is Roger’s Online Protection Firewall blocks you from knowing you have connected…The firewall has to be turned off to use MJ.
Robert Street | Dec 7, 2009 | Reply
Yes, as someone above stated Rogers Firewall does block MJ, I removed Rogers security suite and replaced it with the free security suite from Microsoft.

Hey Robert what about other firewall programs? Do you have to disable that to use MJ? What about a router too? Does that need to be disabled?

Hi All,
I purchased a Magic Jack from the “Source” at the Eaton Centre in Toronto canada(formally Radio Shack) and was told I could definitely get a 416 area code number. When I went to register it on my Intel-based Mac, it only provides area code numbers in the US. I contacted customer service at Magic Jack and they said I should return it to the retailer and get an updated one. Updated? I bought it three days ago! I’m out of the country at the moment, but when I return I am going to have a long chat with the management at the Source. Apparently they have sold a lot of these this Christmas and I’m sure they are going to get a flood of complaints—especially since I was informed that the Source would not allow any returns on this item if the package was open.
Zeerover | Dec 17, 2009 | Reply
That’s quite interesting.
From our experience and feedback from clients, it seems working fine to get the Canadian area codes.
Compare a US phone number and a Canadian phone number, one thing we found immediately is that the Canadian phone number takes longer to dial out than the US phone number, (in the same test network). Don’t know why, it is just what we have seen. Other than that, it is pretty much the same as the US phone number on reviving calls and dialing out.
The price is US$10/year higher than the US phone number. But your local friends can make a local phone call to you.
Actually, we now offer service to get an Canadian phone number for customers who need a local phone number:

You need renew your MJ service.
For the moment, MJ doesn’t provide free phone number transfer to Canadian phone number for existing users. For the moment, the Canadian phone number are available only for new MJ users.
We have recently received high volume order of renew service from expired MJ users all over the places. We highly recommend trying to renew your MJ all by yourself. if you still cannot figure out how to renew the service, you can use our magicJack renew service at this web link:

I’m a MJ user with a USA #.
I took a look at the Canadian supplier’s Web sight. It looks like they sell and activate the MJ, a year at a time and assign it a Canadian # at a 30.US/yr. fee. There is no guarentee provided that the # is going to be “fee” tomorrow. Details are schetchy. It’s not much money to put out for such a potencially useful product but being CANADIAN, we need some assurances. AND the public needs to know they have to purchase the MJ from this supplier, who appears to be the exclusive activator of “inexpensive” Canadain #’s.
Note: You cannot purchase one from a store and obtain a “inexpensive” Canadian no. from this company. The MJ and the Canadain # come together for 60.US for the 1st yr. They activate the # and then send you the MJ…The year starts from when they Activate the #, not from when you receive the MJ in the mail or however. In my opinion, this is not the best way to sell to Canadians. But as a test marketing scheme, that is still to be determined. Good luck and I hope it works out. I’ll be waiting to see.

After the one year service (which is included when a new MJ is purchased), you need either renew the license by yourself, or have someone renew it for you.

As far as I am concerned, MagicJack sounds like a scam. I thought it was a breakthrough when I first heard of it – turns out there is no way to contact the company. No phone numbers are in service, no stocks exist. I would appreciate any insight anyone has, because all my avenues have come up dead-ended. If this is a legitimate company, please contact me ASAP…. Rob, MagicJack is not a scam. For the price it actually works pretty good. However, don’t expect this to replace your homephone.

“Doesn’t go to wall street” doesn’t mean it is not a good business.
magicjack has its own business strategy vs. traditional business.
It has its own channel for distributions of products though it sells products on its own web too.
To become a MJ authorized independent seller, a organization must pass the screen process.
I admit MJ doesn’t provide any form of phone support, which leaves many customer behind when they got issues.
That’s why there is better magicjack activation and license renew service from third parties, such as Au Group Electronics:

You people can carry on this debate forever, but the bottom line is that although retailers such as “The Source” will sell you the device with an understanding that you can get a local number in Toronto, the truth is such numbers are not available through the Magic Jack registration page when you first spark up the device. I have contacted the on-line help at MJ and they are simply at a loss to explain why this is so—really! Perhaps there is a secondary company that will or can register a Toronto number for extra money, but the point is that the original retailer, in my case, “The Source” is not telling their customers the whole story and don’t give refunds when you confront them with the argument that they misrepresented the product. My guess is that they hopped aboard the Magic Jack bandwagon and are now paying dearly in customer dissatisfaction. I suggest any and all potential Magic Jack customers simply stick with SKYPE which is reliable and very inexpensive even when calling from a computer to a land-line or cell number.

OK, I have one of these ‘Magic’Jacs in my hand..
I try to register it with a Canadian number (that the website says is available now) and I only have a choice of American States.
I dont want to pay extra to switch the number once its registered.
MagicJack says the ‘engineers’ are working on it…
But it seems like the ‘Turtle Group’ of ‘engineers’ has gone into winter hibernation.
HOW do I do this?

Well, bit the bullet, was tired of long distance charges and high bills from Rogers, they seem to make up my billing as the go, so Got rid of Rogers, went with a local High Speed Internet company in Toronto, called Velcom for High Speed DSL and no complaints for $30 a month, when with Virgin for cell phone which now is averaging $35 a month for my calls, and bought the MagicJack for my local since their site said they now have Toronto Local. Got the MagicJack in, easy to install, and the quality is excellent, I have a really good phone that I have plugged into it, and I hear and can be heard perfectly, to be honest their customer service is excellent. when I had an issue, they fixed , yes it did take some time, but they were very efficient and bumped me up to their top support, and fixed the issue of when I reboot my computer, the magicJack didnt come back on, after spending about 30 mins with their people, they got it working properly, and all my phone calls in the U.S. and Canada are now free.
My ONLY issue was they dont have local Toronto Numbers like they said. I was given a Hamilton 905 number, which when I selected it, I had hoped would be a 905 Toronto number, it wasnt. When I called them. they said sorry. they are upgrading….. well.. yea ok. basicaly a lie and false advertising.. but…. I now make unlimited phone calls out to anyone for next to nothing. my Rogers cost is gone, I was averaging with cell and internet about $250 A month, and I am trying take them to small claims court for misrepresenting the costs, and making up their own fees everymonth.
My cost now is a total of Internet, Virgin pay as I go, and MagicJack total of 32+35+2.08= $69.08 Total. That is AMAZING savings, and with what I am saving, a year. for me that is $2,174.04 for the year !! I can live with no Toronto phone number for now, but I hope in the next 6 months the Toronto Numbers will be out and can switch it over.
For those who are having issues. there can be many reasons why, But I have tried Skype, and this where I am located, the High Speed Interent service, and the better Computer with 3gig of ram and Video card, faster processor, it is working fine. and I love the voice mails that go to my email.

Don’t be upset if Toronto number will not be available very soon.
New York city phone number was available back a year from now, but it is not available for MJ users any more.
Why? Because, for most of the oversea user, new york city is the most famous town, and it would be good to have a New York Phone number. It easily consumes all New York Phone numbers available at MJ in a very short period of time.
Same story might be true for Toronto. So, if you find it is available, grab it as soon as you can.

Well have to say I was a little ticked off , when I hear somone new buys a magicJack and gets a Toronto 416 number right away. so I go to customer service and ask what is up with that…. well yea.. that customer could get one they are new, and there are only limited numbers and gone when gone, then everyone has to pick the next closest number. like we did. So I said what kind of customer service is that. you know you have a pool of customers who already bough who want that 416 number. why not allow us the ability to get it, then take our old nubers and throw it back in the pool.. yes.. well we are working on that sir… we will have it sorted shortly…
what ever!!…. there customer service on tech issues has been great, this phone number thing is being handled badly, well still I get unlimited calls. but for me would be nice to have the number, for people in TO to call me, so they call my cell and I call then back later. still I am saving money. just frustrating when somone tells you they have Toronto Numbers…. and the reallity is, they Some times have them…. not all the time.
All in all…. I still cant complain. the quality of mine beats Skype
good luck all.

I spoke to my local store called THE SOURCE here in nova scotia that was selling them. They have informed me that they stopped selling them about 1 month ago cause the company ran out of canadian numbers AND the phone companies them selves were going after the magic jack company, so they withdrew the magic jacks and stopped selling them. He said they are in the process of making nwe canadian numbers and trying to find a way to come back so the phone companies cant go after them! This is just what i was told! I looked at different magic jack sites and there was on that gave contact info for hamilton ontario..but there was absoutly NO PHONE contact number whatsoever! lol…i find that amusing. even under the support tab they give teh same contact info as they do for the CONTACT tab. which..is an MAILING ADDRESS! umm isnt this the 21 century? A Mailing addresss for contact and support? haha..i find this amusing..who int heir right mind would even begin to purchase from that site that does not provide phone support? Anyway..reading what i read on here..and hearing what i heard directly from my local store..i will not be purchasing this product until prob years downn the road when they get their stuff toegther and if they dont get sued somehow in the meantime.

I got this resolved myself and thought I should post back to let you know how I solved it.
MagicJack says it works on Mac and PC.
It does. However…..
I was trying to set it up and register it from my iMac. I was not getting anywhere on the registration of a Canadian phone number.
Customer service said I was SOL. “they were working on it”…
Then, Eureka! I decided to try to install it and register it on my PC.
Windows got it sorted out, registered and a Canadian Number purchased (yes, it’s $10) lickety split.
It took all of 3 minutes on Windows.
Once registered with MagicJack and send/receive was confirmed I plugged it into my iMac and my MacBooks.
It works perfectly.
Solved.
Hope it helps someone!

Took three calls to MagicJack support to finally get someone who knew what they were talking about, but…
1 – Magic Jack DOES support Canadian #s
2 – If you have a Mac, you cannot do this yet – You must register on a PC
3 – Once done, the jack works perfectly back on my Macbook
One time fee of $10US to purchase a Canadian # (when I did this in January 2010, there was a block of approx 60 Toronto #s available, all starting with 416-900…)
Yearly fee of $19.95US charged at start of 2nd year onward (1st year included in unit price)
Issues:
* Phone occasionally stops working – Reboot of cpu clears up issue
* Dialing in to virtual meetings (such as Goto Meeting) requires direct dialing via application (as phone entries for passcodes, etc are duplicated)
Re: The Source:
According to an employee, The Source was recently purchased by, or partnered with, Bell (not certain, don’t care to research), and Bell has pulled all MagicJacks from stores after Feb (due to obvious competition with their products)
Final Verdict:
Barring lack of purchase options, and half-assed support, I am extremely happy with my MagicJack. It works without issue while I work from home, and/or while playing XBOX Live, and for the cost, is a perfect compliment to a basic cell plan

I am using MJ since Mid January and extremely happy with performance.
I never reboot my pc to reset. If anyone has any problem the reinstall software again (if possible).
Canadian 1-800 numbers are not reachabale (may be someone which I normally use).
No 911 support that’s why not able to remove home phone line otherwise this is best way to save $300 every month. Happy with reception and call quality.
