MagicJack Local number for Toronto, Canada: When the hell will we have it?

I have been talking about MagicJack for sometime.

MagicJack After a Week in Toronto

Using MagicJack from Toronto, Canada

I was really excited about MagicJack at the beginning. I did make a few calls. Once I talked with a customer representative in the US for like an hour using this. The experience was good and was pretty cool. However, as time goes on I am really losing interest on MagicJack. At this point, I have the magicjack unplugged because I need that USB port to connect my external HDD.

I know people who use Magic Jack a lot. However, if you like me and have a cell phone and a landphone and a phone at work, I don’t understand when you would be using this device. Yes, when you make long distance calls, then it does become handy. However, I don’t make that much long distance calls. The reason is because you cannot have people call you.

If we had a local number for Toronto, then it would have been really good. However, we don’t have it. Therefore, people cannot call us, we have to call people. This is very stupid. They have been saying that we will have a local number soon and we haven’t got it. I don’t want to be cynical but the owner of MagicJack sounds like a shady person to me. When have you seen people promoting the owner as well as the product?

The lack of improvements with MagicJack and constant lies about making magicjack available for Toronto make me feel like as if MagicJack was created for a short-time project.

Please don’t get me wrong. I do understand it helps a lot of people. However, I don’t understand why isn’t there any improvement with this device. The sound quality isn’t that great for the non-MagicJack people you are talking to. There is no proper customer service. For no reason sometimes it stops working.

I don’t want to complain because I paid only 40 dollars for a year. I have had nothing to lose to invest that amount and that’s why I did. However, I really got what I paid for nothing more. Sometimes you pay some money and feel you got a way more. However, this was definitely not that case.

  1. I have a magicJack, and it works perfectly fine. I live in Alberta. People can call me that are in my area, but it will cost them long distance. Or they can call me collect, and I can’t be billed on my magicjack… Just have to put up with the stupid calls from MCI asking me my billing address. Hell no I’m not paying for that, because I dont have to hahaha.

Get an AC POWERED USB HUB, and then you will be able to have as many usb ports as you fucking want. You need to quit fucking bitching. They will have canadian numbers eventually, but in the meantime, it’s still a great savings. I’m sorry you don’t feel that way, but thats too bad. They aren’t lying, they are just taking their time.

Mine has always worked. The sound quality is perfect. Just because you have had problems doesnt mean everyone has. And if you went into your computer and tweaked a few settings, you would most likely find that it works fine. What do you expect for 30 dollars?

  2. Hey Jake, Thanks for your comments.

“What do you expect for 30 dollars?”

That exactly was my point. I got what I paid for and that’s why I can’t really complain. If you read my last paragraph that’s what I was saying.

It’s good for some people but then for me since I have a phone at work, a land phone at home and a cell phone, magicjack really doesn’t have that much purpose. If it had a Canadian number then I would have been able to distribute this number and turn it in to second phone line.

  6. Hi,
I have a business based in the province of quebec (canada). We bought a magic jack and have a US #. we use a cell phone for in-calls and magic for out. It work very well and we juste don’t use it to receive call. For calling its perfect regarding skype cost per min. a good internet connection is required for sound quality (at least 1mbit). We are also waiting for canadian number (without a lot of expect cause we know what is marketing-ting-ting!!!)for 55,00$CAN (15$ shipping with 1,50$ stamp FUCK! )its a good deal.

Canadian numbers would be a improvement.

    tips
make sure your on a least a 1meg internet connection
make sure your plugged in to a usb v2 plug on your computer.

xp computer seems to have the least problems

  8. I’ve owned one for about 7 months now, when I need it, it’s there. I have a cell which I use mostly, but when I’m home and it’s during the day, I use magicjack. Sometimes the quality isn’t great, but you can tell when you call someone and it’s breaking up. Just hang up and try again – Out of 50 calls I have to do this once. It’s not a big deal.
Canadian numbers will be a good thing, I’ve never tried having someone call me collect though, that’s interesting i have to try that lol

Anyway, It’s great. For 40 bucks, you can’t go wrong. This works in Canada, I don’t know why people are saying it doesn’t. Maybe they don’t know how to set it up. Open the packaging, plug into computer, pick up the phone, dial the number… Oh your computer has to have internet in order to work – So check your internets, be sure you’re online first ;)

Did I miss a step anywhere? lol

  9. Canadian numbers are available at themagicjack.ca website.

But the company is charging $59.99CDN + Tax just for the exchange of the number every year… So I don’t know of still cheap. I rather to keep my USA number and keep my cellphone if somebody wants to callme can callme at my cell.

  11. Here is the link to the “Order a CDN #” page – but there is no explanation of terms & conditions or available area codes (if I can’t get a local Victoria # – I’m not interested)

    http://www.themagicjack.ca/order.php

Also, can I use this $60 number to change my US ordered Magicjack to a CDN #? – Don’t really want to drop $60 only to find out “No”

(I ordered 4 Magicjacks from the US before I even knew there WAS a CDN distributor – they don’t seem to be working at making it a seamless experience – the US guys make no mention of a CDN distributor but the CDN guy doesn’t even want to know you if you did not buy from him… pretty unprofessional marketing IMHO

  12. If you want to check out a great service check out http://www.clearpointel.ca. They offer free phone service, unlimited local calling (inbound and out) to landlines, unlimited long distance to major cities across Canada and it is all FREE.

Users have the option of calling from a PC softphone, regular hand held phone or both.

You get a line, number, great calling features and if you are currently using a service like Vonage, you can reconfigure your ATA and never pay for a phone line again. Plus you can get a Toronto number.

If you use an ATA to call from your regular phone, you don’t have to keep your PC running like you do with MagicJack. Of course you have to keep it on if you are calling from your PC softphone.

You can take it with you if you want as well. Calling to the US and outside of major Canadian cities is $0.02 per minute flat rate.

You can register your cellphone and get Canada wide cellphone long distance for $3.95 / month Unlimited.

Check it out – it is a great service and best of all it is free.

    Thanks

  13. http://www.clearpointel.ca. does not support all locations in Canada – specifically (from my perspective) Victoria BC – it is only FREE if you happen to reside in one of the serviced areas

  14. I don’t know why some people are just bitch about everything. M.J. works great only if you have good internet connection.
If you don’t than you need not bother yourself with latest technology.
I have home phone, cell phone, fax, business phone and VoIP plus I just got the M.J. why you ask? because I wanted to try it. Granted it does not have any canadian numbers yet.
SO WHAT…… I use is to make long distance calls, thats what it suppose to do anyway. I didn’t saw M.J add saying people can call you.
The add always say you can call people and beside why would you want to give people M.J number for anyway. AS you said you got home, cell and business phones. Why can’t they just call you on one of those numbers?.
Anyways I don’t care just wanted to give my 2cents.
    P.S.
“You actually need to try it before start bad mouthing the product”.

  15. I’ve had my MagicJack for some 6 months or so and love it! I don’t use any Bell service but just my cell phone. All my calls to family and friends 6 hours away are long distance and so I place those calls on MagicJack. Fantastic. Its probably saved me $1,000. so far! Audio quality is excellent. Right now I use a New York exchange number on my MagicJack but according to their website, we may have Canadian exchanges in as soon as 2 weeks!

  16. I’ve had my 2 magicjacks for 6 months. I love them, I’ve saved a fortune in long distance. What I don’t understand is the crying about how it cost your friends long distance fees to call you, that’s not true. My friends simply call and ring two or three times, then hang up. I look at the call display and call them back. If this seems like too much of an effort to some, I submit they are spoiled. Magicjack, best money I’ve ever spent.

Well I just bought a magicjack and true No canadain numbers are given,,, Yet,,, so we will wait and see if in the near future hopefully before next year when my free year runs out they magicjack will have some canadian numbers, I was told I can change my number once more then after that it will cost $10 ten bucks to change the number and that’s,
what USA bucks so with the exchange $14 bucks that sucks. I have a Texas number now and I live in Canada and your right who the hell going to call me, its the caller that gets screwed for the cost,,, But news flash get all your callers to call you collect. So I am told. And yes the down side is the computer has to be on all the time and that sucks as well when your computer wines like mine does.

  21. I have used MagicJack for about half a year or so and am very happy with it. Most of my family and friends live over six hours from me so when I call them it costs me nothing. The sound quality is excellent. I look forward to a Canadian exchanges and then I will get an exchange to where my family and friends live so it will only be a local call for them.

Too many whiners and complainers here. MagicJack wasn’t designed to become your only phone folks.

  22. I just bought MagicJack and it works great. No Canadian numbers? No problem, I put in the Nevada exchange where my son lives. I now have a local # in Nevada so he can call me any time he wants for free, and I can call him, or anywhere else in Canada-US for free. What more could you ask? If you’re looking for an extra business phone, buy one, and pay for it, it’s a business write-off. Just stop complaining about something that you bought, and didn’t read the fine print. Caveat emptor, or buyer smarten up for Pete’s sake.

  26. I’ve been thinking of getting a Magic Jack device since last week and have been doing a lot of research about the product through various online sources. I recently came across a product call Magic Tech which apparently is a Canadian replica of the Magic Jack. The device is extremely expensive though, its listed as $199.99 but you will get t for $ 149..9 if you call the sales number listed on their website; http://magictechdevices.com/voip_ata.php.
This product is meant fr Canada so you can also get a local Toronto number. This product also lets the users call any where in the world for $25/country/year.

  29. I have been mislead and scammed through the http://www.magictechdevices.com/ company. I purchased a so called “ATA MagicTechDevice” – which simply means (analog telephone adapter). It was sent to me through a COD mail via Canada post. I received a Magic Jack which retails for only $39.95 for which they have charged $150.

I have contacted Magic Tech Device numerous times however I haven’t been able to get through to anyone. I spoke with someone named Shahid (no last name was given), Tahir Ali khan as well as Mumtaz Rathod who confirmed that I was going to have a replacement at no cost, which hasn’t happened (probably never will).

I was also given a tracking number: LH9*7*49***CA, confirmed and repeated by Mumtaz Rathod (if these people even exist) By the way, the tracking number did not exist and I was told Canada Post takes a long time for them to load up. I also spoke with someone named jack who sounded and had an Indian accent.

I threatened to take a lawsuit class action against this company by emailing them on their contact details listed on their webpage and mentioned all the individuals involved will be reported.

I spoke with someone name M. Kashif Ali, who emailed me the confirmation of the refund cheque as they had agreed to pay me the difference as it was a mistake –Obviously not.

I was given the following contact number from which they call you back and not answer it as “they don’t want the customer paying for long distance charges”, 1-603-326-4250, the number is now going fast busy.

I have posted his confirmation email below:

    Dear Mr. User,

As per our conversation, your refund has been approved on the following conditions:

You have paid an amount of CAD 150. We shall refund you the amount LESS all of the following costs:

    - $39.95 (cost of the device), and
    - Shipping charges (as per actual) as incurred in this process

Please provide your consent to the same by replying as “I agree”, so that we may issue your refund.

    Kind Regards,

    M. Kashif Ali

Please also note, if you get to the point where you have recieved your consent email to recieve the final refund cheque. They block your email address after so you’re not able to send them the consent email.. funny – I know- I also know that they will loose the $100 they’ve made off of me.

  31. I got my magicjack today. I called Idaho. It was clear. It’s worth the money invested. One has to give such a product a little more time to improve. Skype is still improving. Since I am a world wode traveler, Skype costs me a lot. Also Skype has no secure system to prevent stealing credits. Last year I lost USD60 worth call time & was never reimbursed. Somehow my password/email was hacked into and all USD60 worth used in one go. when I tracked the email ID it seemed like an insider from Skype. It was a Swedish email. I suspended skype for sometime although I am using it again.
Magicjack is still worth it. I have replaced one of my landlines with it which cost me apprx. C$25 per month.

  46. Thank you Stephen. From one Stephen to another. What I find disturbing is that this magnificent service is offered at $40.00 for the first year, Half that continuing on. You should consider that if you choose this to be your only choice for telephone service, it will come with restrictions. I have given my MJ# to all of my Fam, but with the caveat that they only hear two rings. This way they incur NO charges, I see their # when I get home. This works really well for me, why someone requires a local # is beyond me, unless it is for business, ie incoming calls. I am very happy, and will absolutely be signing up for next year.

  51. This product is not worth the money nor the effort to purchase. There is only chat tech support and those with whom you connect are usually unable to converse due to poor English language skills. My magicjack has not functioned correctly since I bought it last March (2008) and I have spend countless hours with chat tech support but to no avail. They are forever escalating your case to engineers who never follow up nor return your requests for help. I have emailed the owner of the company and been ignored as well. Why would you spend any money on such aggravation? My suggestion if you want something like this, contact http://www.ringcentral.com — it is a more sophisticated service which is a little more costly but it works. Best of all, it offers telephone tech support with intelligent people. Magicjack does not. Magicjack is a joke. Don’t waste your money on it.

Sorry you had such a bad experience with the magicjack. I for one have been very satisfied with my magicjack. It is unfortunate that some individuals will make decision on whether to purchase a magicjack from what is written on this site. I can only imagine that the majority of the current users do not provide feedback because they are getting exactly what they expected. Great service at a great price. Hence no need to comment. This is a venting forum for those that are having problems with their magicjack and represent a very small percentage of actual magicjack users.

    Satisfied user since may 2008.

No matter what service you choose, there will always be some that are not satisfied. Magicjack is inexpensive and worth trying. Magicjack offers a risk free 30 day trial. If you are not satisfied simple return it.

Is it not great that we have choices?

  54. Doug I have to agree with Pedro. If you had so much trouble with the device right away, you should have returned it, without having to pay for the device. They were using a wireless network of dubious speed and quality, yet the unit worked surprisingly well… in my opinion better than Skype. Yep, there were a few redials which quickly reconnected, and a couple of dropped calls, but you gotta consider the fact that we were in a little town that probably didn’t even have universal POTS telephone service 10 years ago… let alone a bit of high speed DSL.

I ordered one when I got home… not here yet as I ordered only a week ago…hopefully soon.

“The Internet users of UAE have expressed their deep concerns at the incumbent telecos Etisalat’s hard steps that deprive them to access VoIP services in the country.

After unsuccessful in blocking Skype in UAE, Etisalat, the internet service provider of the country is now targeting the SIP traffic using a packet filter technology.

As we know, the packet filter technology is the most convenient technology than the port blocking which was used in the past. It is very easy to break the barriers of port blocking as it can be changed at the client end. However, packet filtering is a permanent block to data transfer, but not for the Skype.

Established facts show that Etisalat is itself a VoIP user depending as much as 40 percent of its international calls across VoIP gateways. Still, it gears up to block VoIP services.

  60. I totally agree with Bob’s recommentation to try http://www.clearpointel.ca (I think that David’s recommendation for freephoneline.ca is the same service/company).

I recently signed up and it is a GREAT service…much better than MagicJack as I too purchased a MagicJack but found it pointless since the US number issue.

With regards to concerns that the long distance is only FREE to major Canadian cities you can spend 2 cents/minute to other locations or a FLAT monthly fee of only $4/month to ALL of CANADA (which is what I opted for because I have family in smaller towns).

Honestly, the Clearpointel set-up took me about 3 minutes and worked great right out of the box (and I got the option of keeping my old number or choosing a new “416″ number as opposed to a “647″ exchange (the “416″ numbers can be are hard to find in Toronto).

I’ve only had the service for a relatively short length of time but so far it has ALREADY paid for itself.

Definately worth the cost of $80 for a “Switchbox” plus a $50 activation charge and $20 shipping…hopefully I never have a phone bill again other than the $4/month for unlimited long distance for all of Canada.

I know that this review sounds like a commerical or something but it REALLY is a great, simple service that saves me and my family significant amounts of money.

I’ve been trying to inform as many people as I can about the service since from a purely selfish perspective I would hate to see them ever go out of business.

    Checkout their website at http://www.clearpointel.ca

If I have something negative to report I will also gladly provide that information but so far I am extremely happy with their service.

  63. Actually I had a real bad time with clearpointel, however I did not/do not want to discredit them. My magicJack works great. I’m happy with it. I don’t use Rogers, Bell or Vonage, as a mattere of fact my ISP is Acanac, it’s half the price of those ISP’s and I’ll be adding their phone service for $10. a month soon so people can phone my wife. Didn’t mean to offend, JB.

  64. Steve, I wish you would have shared any negative experiences as I looked all over for negative comments about clearpointel and could not find very much information of ANY kind be it postive OR negative.

The whole purpose of this site is to give other prospective consumers feedback about products such as Magicjack, Clearpointel, Acanac etc….if you had a negative experience then I would have LIKED to have learned about it prior to me signing up for their service and cancelling my Rogers phone…but SO FAR I’m happy with the service, I just hope it continues.

What issues did you have?…maybe I can avoid the same problems.

    Thanks,

    JB

  65. In regards to shipping time, I’ve ordered a Magicjack about a week ago from the U.S. Magicjack website. I understood it would take 3-5 business days to arrive in Vancouver. I also paid the extra $3.95 to “rush” the shipping order.
Reading above, some said it came in 3 weeks?

Can someone tell me who ordered it the same way, how long it took them to get it?

My cell phone reception at my new place kinda sucks…..could be worse…..trying to be patient waiting for my MJ.

P.s.>>read the many comments above…why so many “negative” people in this world? NOTHING IN LIFE IS PERFECT…..BE HAPPY WITH TECHNOLOGY AS IT ADVANCES…EVERYTHING HAS IT’S QUIRKS!! Be happy you have a phone….you could be submitting a message by scroll and on horseback !

  66. Received my MJ the day after I submitted last post above this one.
Actual shipping time took 7 days….to Vancouver….not bad at all. For Canadian residents it was shipped from “Brantford, Ontario”….even though it was ordered via online from U.S.
Still no Canadian (area codes as yet) that’s OK…I just picked a US area code closest to where I live (Seattle,WA)….therefore when someone local calls you, there’s very little or no long dist. charges. Thanks also for the post above about having your friends or family that are calling you to ONLY LET IT RING 2 TIMES AND HANG UP. “WORKS AWESOME”, Their number shows up on your call display….and you call them back for free!!
I am very pleased with MJ so far….I run Vista on my laptop, highspeed wireless…. behind a router that is 2 floors away from my computer. Phone calls are crisp and clear…no dropped calls like my cell phone did!
    Conclusion:==HAPPY CAMPER for $40.00!!!

  69. I bought my MagicJack in November 2008. At the time the computer recognized the MagicJack right away to register for a phone number. I shutdown the computer and came back a few days later. The MagicJack wasnt recognized. After many hours or online sessions. I gave up.

This is the answer given to me by MagicJack:

MagicJack will not be recognized if applications such us Roxio, Yahoo Jukebox, Musicmatch and Nero are the known programs that will affect for the MJ to work. Our engineers area working on it now to determine that cause of this issue, please bare the inconvenience as of the moment.

The software has a technical conflict with the Mj. I spent hours online with them trying to get it to work. After trying another computer per their suggestion, and spending 8 hours online with them, I discovered that Nero was causing me the problems. After removing Nero the MagicJack started up. I have the latest version of Yahoo on my computer and it doesnt interfere with the Magicjack.

Just a little information to pass onto others that may be experiencing dificulties

  71. I love my Magicjack. Bought in Nov 2008. Had some trouble at first due to my ISP service. I resolved that issue. I recommend plugging the Magicjack directly into a USB port on the computer and not a USB hub. My call quality has been excellent since. I use it to supply my home with phone service. I connected it to a small netbook (ASUS 1000HE) so I have low power consumption and now I bought another 2 Magicjacks for portability while leaving the original to service my home. For $5 bucks a month I have 3 phone numbers with a bunch of extra services (email messaging my favorite) and it works with my security system and fax. It can have a hiccup once in awhile where I may have a problem faxing and have to try again but it has always worked in the end and I will be taking it with us to Europe this fall. Some people have issues but as far as I can see the problems vary with each user. The post above this one mentions a compatibility issue with Nero but I use Nero and have no problem. Like I said I love my Magicjack as it saves me money and is working well. When I travel to Europe to meet relatives we are thinking we may leave them a Magicjack so they can call us as it obviously would be a nice gift. It may not be for everyone but it is working wonderfully for me.

  76. Got 2 technical questions for users of MJ:

    1. Does the “Caller ID” work with this system? If yes, does it show US numbers?

    2. I have phones in all rooms in the house – does this system work for all of them?

    Thanks in advance!

    Leo | May 20, 2009 | Reply

  77. Leo;
    1. Yes it has caller ID which displays the area code and phone number of the caller.(US or Canada)
    2. Yes this will work with your home network. (It works on mine.) You need to connect it to your system and disconnect your previous service provider. A drawback to the MagicJack is you need to connect it to a computer which needs to be on all the time if you want your phone operating all the time. Computers can use a fair bit of power. Netbooks will work and they consume significantly less power so if you have one of these this would be the best way of running the MagicJack as your phone service for your home. After that … enjoy!

    Tom Wacowich | May 20, 2009 | Reply

  78. Leo;
Another thing I thought I should mention is apparently there can be compatibility issues with some phones which cause the loss of the call display function. I am not sure what the issues are as, like I said it is working for me very well. For the price I would recommend trying one and if it does not work for you … you won`t have lost much and it will provide you with North American calling almost free.

Also was told that they ‘hope’ to have Canadian phone #’s by the end of this year.
It was interesting to read everyone’s comments. I am convinced enough to get a MJ, even with a U.S. area code, because of my travelling…it would reduce my cellphone bill a lot.

But like people said for smoeone to call me its long distance cause im in ontario witha arizona number(had a friend there figured hey why not pick that area) but on the premise that everyone owned a magicjack(my guess thats what the company wants) would make no long distance for no one, its just that they want u to promote thier product so they dont have to its quite simple, if u get yourfamily to all get it no one has long distance no more. but until then, i guess people will just have to dial long distance to reach me.

  96. It may be true.
But a magic jack with Canadian phone number is really useful for many local Canadian people.

Think about this, a monthly local phone bill is twice more expensive than a one-year magicJack phone bill.

I will definitely buy more than one magicJack if they offer Canadian phone numbers.

I mean from magicjack, not from third party, which will again send you a very high monthly bill.

It sucks if those local Canadian telephone company block the way to this phone innovation.

I would think this bad commercial action nothing but hold the whole Canadian community behind their USA neighbors.

I am a scientist, and currently using MATLAB/Simulink and some Labview staff on my computer, I saw a few complains on Mentor Graphics Power PCB issue when using a magicJack on the internet, anybody has a comment?

  99. I ordered my majicjack from magicjack.ca this past Wed and it arrived in the mailbox on Friday! Their website (in the TOS) did say you would get a Canadian # for inbound calls and US # for outbound. Now it does not say that anymore. I emailed Victor last night and asked about it – being the weekend I don’t expect a reply until Monday (we have emailed about other concerns and he has replied very promptly). I’m excited about it (have made a few calls so far, both long distance and local) to landline and other VIOP (Cogeco) users. So far so good. If it’s true that Rogers, bell et al are interfereing with MJ coming out with Canadian #’s we need to harass our politicians and CRTC until it happens. Put it this way – the point of this for me was to get off bell and if a Canadian # is not available I may return my MJ. BUT, if bell (or the others) have any remote involvement in it not happening I will cancel my bell and deal with the nuisance of not having a CDN # just out of spite. let’s hope they play fair and the CDN# becomes available soon. This is a great product for a lot of people.

  108. magicJack is great. It is absolutely amazing the number of people who have nothing better to do than to badmouth companies. Yes, you get a US number. You are told this up front. People CAN call you on this number. You can also use the FREE CALL FORWARDING service to forward all calls to any phone in Canada including cells (of course you use your cell minutes). You get FREE DIRECTORY ASSISTANCE, FREE CALLER ID, FREE 3 WAY CALLING, FREE VOICEMAIL…what more do you want? The call quality is awesome…far superior to Skype.

With the current 5 year extension deal that works out to $1 per month for unlimited calling to anywhere in the US and Canada. Anyone who doesn’t like that idea is an idiot. Canadian numbers not available? Who cares at $1 per month. If your buddies complain tell them to get one too.

Hey guys! $1 per month! Think about it.

For those fortunate enough to use their brain and buy one of these there is a secret to increasing the volume on your handset. Double click the speaker icon in the tray, click on devices, click on “Handset (USB Phone by Tigerjet)” and you will get 2 sliders – handset and magicJack. Simply maximize both.

Canadian numbers won’t happen because of the CLEC rules in Canada. Look at the problems for Globalive. You have to have a minimum Canadian investment to qualify. magicJack and their CLEC, YMAX Corp., are both 100% American so they do not qualify for Canadian telecommunications ownership. They are, however, the only CLEC registered in ALL 50 states. That is quite an accomplishment.

There is a possibility that they may come out with a device that will connect directly to your router so you don’t have to have your computer on. There is already such a deice from another company but the price is much higher.

I canceled at the last moment and it offered a free US. number, however it just kept timming out without giving me any thing. My only option was to unplug the hard ware. There is nothing in the packaging that says you cant receive calls. I am ready to take it back and forget it. If it seems to good it probably is.

  123. To Olga…can’t you click on a link? Look above your post.

To Rob…you are obviously a paid complainer for their competition. Your comments will be disregarded.

Again…you need a new magicJack to get Canadian numbers but the option will appear on registration. Click the same link I pointed out to Olga to see the locations and area codes available. Agreed, they need better documentation on their site. If you have an issue with this then chat with customer service.

  124. It is probably true for people living in big cities. We knew Toronto local phone number is not available, neither is new york city (it was last September).

Numbers for Smaller towns, such as Windsor, Mississauga, are available.

  125. I just don’t get it. Rob I don’t believe at all. I suspect that he is one of those people paid to go to chat rooms and dis other competing products. There are 2 area codes available for Toronto and more available for the 905 belt.

As for Olga…can you not look at the post just before yours and click on a link?

An awful lot of people have nothing better to do than to dis the magicJack or are getting paid to do it.

Even with a US phone number, who wouldn’t want to pay just $20 a year to get unlimited outgoing calls to any number in the US and Canada? You would have to be insane. I have had mine for over a year now and love it. I have a US number and don’t expect others to call me on it. I got the magicJack to get unlimited calling and not have to pay a Canadian phone company about 12X to 40X as much.

So guys…get a life! MagicJack is an awesome product with good chat customer service. Canadian numbers are available but for a slightly higher price. There is no e911 service provided but you go into this with that knowledge. How simple. I’m paying $1 per month for the next 5 years for unlimited calling to anywhere in Canada or the US. Beat that!

  126. why they dont publish phoen number or link for area code on website ? where can i buy magic jack and can i get phone number of my own choice ?

  127. There is…but this website doesn’t allow the posting of links in the forum or I would post it. Go to their website, go to the Customer Care/Live Agent link at the bottom of the page and then question the site about area codes. If you leave a blank question then you will be able to access the live support chat. It really does work and work well. I have had to use it a couple of times and everything went smoothly.

  128. I am sorry, you are right there are numbers available for the GTA, My problem is that there is no way to change a number in Canada. The unit is great, I am not paid to bad mouth the magic jack. The quality is amazing. I made a mistake when I registered so I will be getting a new one to solve the problem.

  129. I don’t understand why people will get magic jack if you wanted a Canadian number! Did you read? You have to pay $99 a year to get a Canadian number!

    Look at this website…

    http://www.acanac.com/Phones.html

I been using Acanac for years! Paying only $9.95 per month.

I bough my own unlock ATA box for $80 from ebay! Not $150 they sell for in the Canadian Magic Jack website. Program my own ATA box… and plug in a phone behind it!

Acanac also gave me a softphone software where I can use it on my laptop!.. I also use a free software called “fring” (http://www.fring.com) and I can use the Acanac VoIP number on my Nokia N95!

So why Magic Jack for Canada?

  130. does anyone know if mj works through an internet stick? we live in an area where only dial-up is available so we switched to a telusmobility wireless stick. we had already been thinking about dumping our landline as all of us have cellpohones and we seldom use the landline number any more. the mj would be prefect if we can use it with the stick.

    thanks for any comments

  131. It does have an option for using on a 3G Aircard such as with Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, etc. However, Telus might block its use. I would call Telus to confirm if they block any services on 3G. Most block Skype for instance in Canada.

Why pay $10 a month or $80 for a box. I have a MJ and it cost me $120 USD for 5 years north america calling service with a Canadian number. The device is small … great for those who travel and works great! Deal with the USA magicjack website … you get the best deal there. Works out to $2 CDN a month roughly.

  133. It depends how fast your cell phone stick can get you a internet link.

Normally, the minimum up-link speed is about 80K, but in the real life, a 768K works much better.

  134. To Tom..

I don’t know where you get info from.. according to this website (below).. you need to pay $99 per year for a Canadian Magic Jack. And if you wanted an ATA box.. it cost more!

  135. Check out this online store:
    http://www.auelectronics.com/products/service/magicjack.html

And Canadian MJ can be order here:
    http://www.auelectronics.com/products/service/magicjack/svs-mj-005.html

Annual MJ Canadian license renew will be around US$29.99/year.

  136. You are going to the wrong site. Go to the US site and order from there. Then you will pay $39.95 US for the magicJack and another $10 if you want a Canadian number. Then it is $19.95 US per year if you get a US number or $29.95 perr year for a Canadian number.

I believe that the site you are going to is not an authorized reseller or agent. If you do some reading online there is lots of information about legal tussels between the two.

Use http://www.magicjack.com. It has a better offering of services. You get a MJ for $40 USD plus shipping plus $10 for a Canadian number plus $60 or $70 USD for the 5 year deal. It is the best deal going and you are dealing with the REAL Magicjack company. Take care and enjoy!
