After watching the US primary drama unfolding on the republican side this question popped into my head. Romney and others are trying to portray McCain as being not a “true” conservative. I have seen this in other people as well. Many people know if they stand on the right (conservative) or on the left (liberal) of the political spectrum. They agree with almost everything of their respective parties from the political spectrum.

However, I have found that it is extremely hard for me to stand on the right or the left political spectrum. A vast majority of the issues I do agree with the people on the left or the liberals. For instance, I strongly believe in free medical care for all the citizens. I also believe that the outlook of a nation is judged by how it treats in minorities. I think sometimes “special favours” or affirmative actions are required to provide equality for the population, who are not doing enough. I also believe that businesses do require some regulations to make sure that it is not trying to carry out aggressive actions. On the social side, I favour homosexual marriage. I believe that we do not choose our sexual orientation and therefore, it is stupid to discriminate against people on the basis of this. I am also very pro-science. I strongly believe that evolution should be taught in classes and that creationism is just bullshit. It doesn’t make any particular sense to me. We see examples of evolutions in our daily life. I don’t want to get into that crap. Oh yes, I also strongly believe in the separation of the church and the state. The conservative movement in the west actually has become extremely affiliated with religions and I think this has to stop.

There are many things where I strongly support the conservative policies. The biggest of one is the national security. I believe that the western governments need to understand the threats of terrorism and take strong actions to stop it. I think we are not doing enough. It is so easy for a terrorist in the city of Toronto to carry a bag with bombs and explode them in downtown subway stations during the rush hours. In this issue I am actually extremely on the right even compared to many hardcore conservatives. I think civil liberties are important but I am happy to give it up for the sake of the security of the nation. Only the wrongdoers have to worry not others. I am happy to wait in the airport or subway stations if required for a tight security. I don’t really believe in attacking other nations. I just want the western nations to become strong in their own areas. War doesn’t solve anything. It just encourages the ideology of the terrorists. It’s not a war against another nation but a war against an extremist ideology. I am also not really a big fan of some of the pro-multicultural policies of Canada. The taxpayers money goes to various cultural organizations to help them celebrate their cultures. Why would a person, who has nothing to do with my culture would pay for my cultural celebrations. It doesn’t make any sense. Also, in our media, it’s really encouraged to maintain the cultures of our parents. Therefore, we got people here, who are not Canadian first but Indian or Chinese first and Canadian second. That’s why we have Quebec trying to separate from us.

Therefore, it really becomes hard for me to choose a party during elections. I have been a member of the Liberal Party, Conservative Party and Green Party. During the previous federal election, I voted for the Conservative Party but during the provincial election I voted NDP, the most lefty party.

Even though it is hard for me to choose a party, there is one person, with whom I disagree the most. I disagree with him in every single point. It’s not even funny. The person is Ron Paul. I think this dude is extremely out of touch with western politics. He believes in stupid conspiracy theories. He is an attention whore. His views on economy would ruin our environment and everything. He doesn’t want to regulate the corporations and so they are allowed to rape us as much as possible. On national security, he believes aliens attacked the twin towers (!!)….well not really but he would say that to get some votes of 15-year-olds. Oh wait, 15-year-olds can’t vote. His policies would have terrorists bombing the US. He blames the US for all the problems of terrorism. It is correct that the US is partially to be blamed but not totally to be blamed. People like Kamal Ataturk also fought off the western occupations of Turkey but he didn’t use suicide bombing or used religion to blind people. The reason is simple. Kamal Ataturk was not fighting for an ideology but was fighting for his country. That was his main purpose. On the other hand, the terrorists are fighting for a twisted version of religion. Therefore, you cannot blame just the US for all the problems. The terrorists would have attacked the western countries regardless of their presence in their nations.

Anyways, getting back to the discussions, it is extremely hard for me to stand firmly on one part of the political spectrum. I sort of support the mixture of different policies. I am always undecided and make up my mind a few days before the elections.

Ok so as Michael Geist informed us, the copyright law introduction has been delayed. This is what he has to say.

The word this afternoon is that Industry Minister Jim Prentice will not introduce the Canadian DMCA tomorrow. The thousands of letters and phone calls over the past week have urged the government to adopt balanced copyright reforms that meets everyone’s needs and does not unduly harm education, consumer rights, privacy, and free speech. The delay provides an exceptional opportunity for Minister Prentice to consult more broadly and to factor those concerns into the forthcoming bill in the interests of all Canadians.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that people made a strong noise about this issue. The facebook group got more than 14,000 members in one week. A lot of bloggers started writing about this issue. I wrote to my local MP as well. However, I am not sure if we should start celebrating about this yet. Michael Geist has clarified that he is not sure why the introduction has been delayed. It could be that it was just delayed for a couple of days. Maybe this deal might be introduced tomorrow.

To tell you the truth, I am just too excited to see what is going to happen next. If Harper introduces this then for sure his party will not be coming to power in next 12 years. It’s sort of like a political suicide for him. We also shouldn’t forget that our previous Liberal government also tried to do something similar. However, they failed. I am pretty sure that these Corporate Conservatives will fail too.

For now, here is an interesting video made by a musical artist from Montreal expressing his views on this drama. This law is supposed to protect people like him. Let’s see what he has to say.
